John was given three years to live by his doctors following the war due to shrapnel in his heart, yet survived into his 90's.

  A former grocery store clerk in Kaukauna, John C. DeGoey, was promoted to Second Lieut. on the field of battle and also decorated with the Bronze Star medal for heroic action against the enemy. He was a technical Sgt. and acting platoon leader in company B of the 84th armored infantry Battalion of the seventh armored division. Lt. DeGoey had previously been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action at Metz. He received the Bronze Star for having led his platoon at Meljal, Holland. The platoon was trapped and faced with an overwhelming enemy force for three days in late October before reaching friendly lines.

  John C. De Goey, Jr., Kaukauna, age 94, passed away on December 18, 2012 at Parkside Care Center. He was born September 6, 1918 in Kaukauna, son of the late John and Anna (Weiss) De Goey, Sr. John was a U.S. Army Veteran serving his country during WWII. A highly decorated veteran, John earned his European Battlefield Commission in 1944 to Second Lt. He served with the 3rd, 11th, and 7th Armored Divisions and was awarded the silver and bronze stars as well as two purple hearts. John was given three years to live by his doctors following the war due to shrapnel in his heart, yet survived into his 90's. On September 29, 1951 he was united in marriage to Ethel Robel at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Kaukauna. John was a master cabinet maker for nearly 40 years until his retirement. He worked in the area for Standard Mfg., Hoepner Mfg., and Structo Mfg. Woodworking was John's hobby and he enjoyed it. He is survived by his three children: Raymond J. (Tracy) De Goey, Linda M. (Mathew) Diedrich, and Patricia A. De Goey; a brother, James De Goey; a brother-in-law, Kenneth (JoAnn) Robel, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ethel, brothers and sisters: William (Charlotte), Harold, Marion (William) Lambie, Dorothy (LeRoy) Westby, Mathilda (Emerald "Jack") Ullery, as well as Ethel's relation: Robert (Ceal) Robel, Richard (Barbara) Robel, Virginia (Oscar) Patschke, and Martha (Charles) Schell; and sister-in-law, Delores De Goey. Funeral Services for John will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at BOETTCHER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna with Chaplain Jordan Kuczwara officiating. Friends may call on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton.
