- Mary Ann Kalista, age 90, died peacefully on Saturday, February 6, 2010, at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna. She was born on January 14, 1920, in Kaukauna; daughter of the late Charles J. and Mary C. (Shuber) Kalista. Mary Ann graduated from Kaukauna High School and the Oshkosh State Teachers College and taught as a middle grade teacher briefly in Lena, Antigo and Kimberly, and for many years, in Appleton. She also spent a year teaching the children of U.S. Armed Forces personnel in Orleans, France. In the middle of her career, she went back to college and received a Master of Library Science degree from George Peabody College, Nashville, TN. She then served as director of the IMCs (Instructional Media Centers) for several elementary schools in Appleton and later as Librarian and Instructional Materials Director at Huntley School, Appleton, until her retirement in 1984. After retiring, Mary Ann was instrumental in giving Appleton school children a glimpse of what it was like to attend school during the early days of our country. She dressed in colonial garb and taught children part-time in a log cabin, one-room school house for 13 years. Mary Ann was a 50 year member of Delta Kappa Gamma International (a professional honor society of women educators), serving them in many offices. She also belonged to Catholic Daughters and served as a Girl Scout Leader. Mary Ann was enthusiastic about life, loved children, and sharing knowledge. She also loved travel and explored many European and Middle Eastern countries during her spare time while teaching in France and after retirement.
Mary Ann is survived by her sister, Caroline M. Sullivan, Kaukauna; brother, Charles A. Kalista, Rolling Meadows, IL; sister-in-law, Betty Kalista, Hurst, TX; nieces: Carol (Robert Smith) Sullivan, Appleton; Leslie (Bill) Gleason, Champaign, IL; Susan Doherty, Schaumberg, IL; and Grace Ryan and Jennifer Bargas, both of Ft. Worth, TX; nephews: Clifford J. (Phyllis) Kalista, Radnor, PA, and Jeff C. (Kay) Kalista, Bedford, TX. She is further survived by 11 great-nieces and -nephews and five great-great-nieces and -nephews, as well as by many beloved friends.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, her brother Clifford Kalista, her sister-in-law Joan Kalista, her brother-in-law, Major John A. Sullivan and a niece Mary Bob Wellborn.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Ann will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2010, at 11 a.m. at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna, with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Family and friends may visit Wednesday (TONIGHT) from 4-7 p.m. at Fargo Funeral Home, Kaukauna, and again on Thursday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass. Inurnment will take place in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Kaukauna. A memorial fund is being established in her name.
