- Marie (Mom) 85, passed away peacefully at Care Partners on July 9th, 2012 surrounded by her family.
She was born on July 6th, 1927 to Michael and Frances (Kugler) Goehler in Appleton. Marie attended Appleton High School where she graduated in 1945. She worked at the Post Crescent for many years and later at Mean's Service.
Marie married Joseph Utschig on October 2nd, 1950 and they had three children; Michael, Patricia and Jo Ann. After Joe's early death, she married Virgil (Sam) Achterberg on November 11th, 1978.
Marie and her family especially loved spending time at their home on College Avenue, where Marie lived for 51 years. She was an excellent cook, loved to work in her garden, play cards, and host frequent parties with relatives. Marie was also an avid reader and loved to read to her children and grandchildren. Marie, Sam, and their family enjoyed endless summer vacations at their cottage on Pickerel Lake. They loved to go boating, fishing and of course frying the catch of the day.
Marie is survived by her children: Dr. Michael Utschig , Madison; Patricia Carlson, BSN, Appleton; and Dr. Jo Ann (Harold) Scott, Laguna Niguel, CA; Grandchildren: Aaron and Jesse Utschig; Joseph (Julie) Utschig, Christopher (Melissa) Ziemer, and Taylor Carlson; Gavin and Trevor Scott; Great-grandchildren Libby and Michelle Ziemer and Vivian Utschig; sisters Rosella Bergman, Ione Loughrin, June Bergman and brother, Gerald (Mary) Goehler. She is preceded in death by her husbands Joseph Utschig and Virgil Achterberg, her parents; Michael and Frances Goehler, her brother Michael Goehler and her sister Bernice Williams, her in-laws, Clarence Williams, Wallace Bergman, Carlton Bergman and Cyril Loughrin; Maxine (Bernard) Blob, Glen (Dolores) Utschig and Reno (Janet) Utschig.

She was truly loved by all of you and we are so grateful for all of your help.
All the angels were waiting for you Mom and we love you and miss you - Mikey, Trisha, Jo Ann and the entire Family.
Memorial services will be held on Friday July 27, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior St. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
