  Seaman first-class Carl Nieuwenhuis and his wife arrived Saturday and is spending a 30-day leave with his parents on Klein Street. He enlisted in the Navy August 1943 and served 18 months in the South Pacific. He now wears the American campaign ribbon, victory ribbon and the Asian Pacific ribbon with two battle stars.

  Nieuwenhuis, Carl J. Carl J. Nieuwenhuis, Kaukauna, age 78, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at his home. He was born February 6, 1927 in Appleton, the son of the late Joseph and Amelia (Gerow) Nieuwenhuis. Carl married Ruthelle Nussbaun on December 18, 1950 in Forrest, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Navy and Air Force from 1943-1962. Carl was employed at Miller Electric retiring in 1992. He was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ and Electric City Post #3319 VFW. Carl is survived by his wife, Ruthelle Nieuwenhuis of Kaukauna; two daughters: Alice (James) Ehlke of Menasha; and Debbie (Lawrence) Van Dyn Hoven of River Falls; four grandchildren: Jeff (Kelly) Ehlke, Jennie Martin, Travis and Holly Van Dyn Hoven, two brothers: Joseph (Chris) Nieuwenhuis of Kaukauna; and Melvin (Donna) Nieuwenhuis of Little Chute; a sister, Lillian (Lyle) Spreeman of Appleton. Further survived by other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Lorraine Gasper and Arlene Spreeman. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2005 at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 510 Sullivan Ave., Kaukauna with Rev. Melinda Feller officiating. Interment will take place at Kelso Cemetery, Kaukauna. Visitation will be held from 4 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2005 at Greenwood-Fargo Funeral Home and at the Church Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
