  Coxswain Melvin Verhagen arrived Friday to spend a 30-day leave with his mother before reporting to San Pedro, California where he received an honorable discharge under the point system. He was stationed on the USS South Dakota, Admiral Halsey's flagship. He had been in the Navy three years and overseas more than two years of that time. Verhagen wears the Asian-Pacific ribbon with seven battle stars and the Pacific liberation ribbon. He was employed at the Kaukauna Times before he entered service.

  See Image Melvin M. Verhagen, 901 S ullivan Avenue, Kaukauna, age 57, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon. He w as born January 10, 1922 in Kaukauna where he had been a lifelong reside nt and had been employed by the Kaukauna Times as a pressman. He was a me mber of the American Legion Thomas E. Kees Post 496, Sherwood. Mr. Verhag en was a World War II, U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors include his mother, M rs. Catherine Verhagen, of Kaukauna; three brothers, Ervin and Eugene, bo th of Kaukauna and Jerome of Waupaca; three sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Johann a) Fink, of Algoma, Mrs. Walter (Regina) Swanningson and Mrs. Rosemary Kra mer, both of Kaukauna. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis, a b rother, Steven, and a sister Lucina. The funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Th ursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Kaukauna, with Rev. Gary Dantinne offi ciating. Internment will be in Holy Cross cemetery Kaukauna.
