Her public school education was supplemented by religious educati on classes at the Catholic Church, a centerpiece of family activities. S he worked at home and at part-time jobs within walking distance of her ho me in Combined Locks, WI. At age 20, she married a farmer, helped run t he family farm for 44 years, and raised a family of eight children. Althou gh she regretted the lack of a more formal education, she participat ed in continuing education programs and encouraged her children to atte nd college. With strong family values and a keen sense of community, she w as mostly self-taught. Yet, she encouraged her eight children to gain as m uch education as they could to better themselves and the lives of their fa milies.
