Richard Jay Hurd was born January 27, 1920, in Alden, Iowa the son of Stanton F. & Irene L. (Bryan) Hurd.Richard grew up in the Hardin County area where he attended school.He was married to Myrna Marie McDonald, November 24, 1939 in Lancaster, Missouri. He moved to Hampton for about a year before moving to Dows, where he farmed until about 1959. He moved into Dows and started working as a carpenter, where he enjoyed fixing and repairing all types of items. He served his country during WWII from June 1944 to January 1946 in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed collecting owls, playing the harmonica, playing cards, and dancing. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dows. Richard Jay Hurd, age 82, of the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, Iowa, formerly of Dows, Iowa, passed away Monday, August 20, 2002 at Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. He is survived by a son: Murvil & wife Connie Hurd, Eagan, Minnesota, two daughters: Darla & husband Willis Brooks, Bella Vista, Arkansas and Leann & husband David Tjarks, Goldfield, Iowa, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a brother: Max & wife Gerry Hurd, Council Bluffs, Iowa and a sister: Geraldine Blankenship, Hampton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Myrna (July 26, 2002), a daughter: Janet Jansen, two granchildren: Jeff & Jessica Jansen, a brother: Donald and a sister: Marie Newberry. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held Friday, August 23, 2002, 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr.Rich King, First Presbyterian Church, officiating. A VISITATION: Will be from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory, where the family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. INTERMENT will follow services at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery, Marshalltown, Iowa, with the V.F.W., Harry C. Harter Post No. 839, providing full military honors. MEMORIALS may be directed to the Richard J. Hurd Memorial Fund. PURSEL - DAVIS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY is in charge of arrangements.

Myrna M. Hurd, age 82, of the Iowa Veterans Home, formerly of Dows, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church of Marshalltown, with Rev. Rich King, First Prebyterian Church officiating. Friends may call for VISITATION from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday, at Pursel-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in Marshalltown, where family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery, Marshalltown, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established in her name.
Myrna was born October 11, 1919, in Franklin County, Iowa the daughter of John and Lena (Tjarks) McDonald. She was raised and educated in Popejoy, Buckeye, and Iowa Falls, graduating from the Buckeye High School. On November 24, 1939, she was united in marriage to Richard Jay Hurd at Lancaster, Missouri. Following their marriage they lived in Dows, Iowa Falls, and Hampton, returning to the Dows area in 1946. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dows. Myrna is survived by her husband: Richard J. Hurd of Marshalltown, son: Murvil (Connie) Hurd of Eagan, Minnesota, two daughters: Darla Marie (Mrs. Willis) Brooks of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Leann (Mrs. David) Tjarks of Goldfield, six granchildren and six great grandchildren, five sisters: Leora Kulhman of Marshalltown, Mary Lou Risius of Union, Ruby Hallet of Gifford, Darlene (Mrs. Leonard) Peters of Marion, Arleta (Mrs. Loren) Peters of Marshalltown, and two brothers: Glen (Mae) McDonald of Boone and Bernard (Jacque) McDonald of Callaway, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, two grandchildren: Jeff & Jessica Jansen, daughter: Janet Jansen, two brothers: Leslie & Wilbur McDonald, and a sister: Blanche Classon.
