Phillip Ortlieb was the son of Mathias Ortlieb and his first wife. His father emigrated to the U.S. in the late 1840s and settled in Wisconsin. In 1851, Phillip and his siblings left Germany on the ship S.M.Fox which sailed from LeHavre, France and arrived in the port of New York 25 July 1851. The children Bertha 13, Otto 12, Philip 11, Louis 9, Friedoline 5 and Maria 3 or 4, appeared to travel alone on this journey. They joined their father on his farm in Manitowoc Co., WI.
Some of these children appear in the 1860 U.S. Census. Bertha Ortlieb may have married, but she, Louis and Maria are not enumerated with the rest of Mathias' family.
