- LA CRESCENT, Minn. - Peter "Huba" John Mayer Jr., 78, of La Crescent passed away Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center Hospice in La Crosse.
Pete was born Aug. 31, 1935, in rural Dimock, S.D., to Peter and Clara (Ebersdorfer) Mayer. Pete was one of 14 children who grew up on a farm.
Pete attended school in Dimock and Parkston, S.D. He served in the U.S. Army and upon discharge, moved to the La Crosse area, where he met and married Rose Anna (Leis) Hundt. They were later divorced. Pete drove truck and peddled freight for nearly 30 years with Gross Common Carrier and held several other delivery jobs in the La Crosse area. When Pete was out and about in the La Crosse area, it was rare for him not to run someone he knew.
Pete was a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge. He spent his time fishing, hunting, cutting wood, playing cards, watching sports and helping family, friends and neighbors with many projects.
Pete is survived by his daughter Kathy "NawT" (Al) Johnson, Stoddard; sons, John Mayer, Safford, Ariz., and Robert (Jody) Mayer, Minnetonka, Minn.; grandsons, Zachery Mayer, Minnetonka, and Reed Johnson, Stoddard; granddaughter, Madison Mayer, Safford, Ariz.; brothers, Edmund (Arleen), Bill (Charlotte) and Dan (Shirley), Mitchell, S.D.; sisters, Adeline Heisinger, Mitchell; Florence Rokusek, Freeman, S.D., Jean (Roger) Shipman, Paola, Kan., and Sister Janice Mayer, Yankton, S.D.; sisters-in-law, Marlene Mayer, Anaheim, Calif., and Karen Mayer, Mitchell; numerous nieces and nephews, and very special friend, Mary Ghelf, Viroqua.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, James, Harvey and Lou; his sisters, Ragina Parker, Delores Hafner and Clara "Sherri" Novachich; sister-in-law, Sally Mayer; brothers-in-law, William VenOsdel, Gus Parker, Al Hafner, James Novachich, Fran Rokusek and Louis Heisinger; and daughter-in-law, Jennifer (Hunt) Mayer.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful and caring people that work at the Valley View Healthcare in Houston, Minn., for making him feel at home during his stay there. Also, the family would like to thank the staff at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center for making his last days more comfortable.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 8, The Church of the Crucifixion, La Crescent. The Rev. Gregory Havel will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, La Crescent chapel, 111 South Oak St. Visitation will also be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass Saturday at the church.
