Hi from Cindy Long (Mellis) Kelly, I met with Gloria yesterday for quite a while. We went through many photos together. Her mother, Olga Stene (Steene), was married to my father's oldest brother, Anton Long. The Long family were born and grew up in Stanley.
Gloria showed me a picture of her Grand-mother and Grand-father Stene taken in Norway. The grand-father was holding a young child, perhaps around 2 years old. Note on picture said it was Olga; if it was Olga, Kathryn was not in the picture. After Mr Stene died, the mother, Marie Stene, came to stay with her sister, Nicolina Thorson (Torson) Lindstrom, in Chicago. Nicolina was married to John Lindstrom. Olga went to work for AT&T; Kathryn and mother worked another place (I think I wrote it in some notes.) Then the mother noticed an ad for a housekeeper in Stanley, WI for a Mr. Haugen. She took the job, bringing her girls with her. She couldn't stay in the same house if they weren't married, so they married, but Gloria said it was in title only. He was a very cruel man. His first wife died- that union produced 6-7 children who were pretty much grown and on their own. He had married a second time to Mrs. Hansen who had two girls - Astrid "Pinky" and Hannah Hansen. The marriage produced 3 sons: Einor, Melvin, & Christian. When Hannah turned 18, she got out of the household by coming to live with my grandmother, Martha Thorpe Long (Mr. & Mrs. Johan J Long.) Pinky got out to live with Olga and Anton when they got married. She worked at my grandfather's store, J.J. Longs & Sons. When the girls got out, Marie left Mr. Haugen. Gloria wasn't sure who she lived with, but she remembers Grandma Haugen being part of the family. And I remember my dad, Norman Long, talking about the Haugens as part of the family, so they must have all been quite close.
Gloria said she got the family tree (that I had mentioned to Sara) from Lynn Miller. She wasn't sure she could add much to your info. But, I can make a copy of the picture of Marie & Mr. Stene taken in Norway and send it to one of you. Gloria has several health issues: after heart surgery 2-3 years ago, her sternum was removed, so that creates some issues. She has osteoarthritis and scoliosis so has a lot of problems resulting from shifting in her hips and back; internal organs seem to be shifting as well. Her vision in left eye is nearly gone, and not good in the right eye. And some intestinal problems; and problems sleeping.... but she is very alert and has good memory for many events and people.
I took a few boxes of old Stanley newspapers home with me... my job is to go through them and cut out articles that mention Longs, Thorpes, Haugens, Overgards (my mother's brother was the doctor in Stanley) and Vitorts (my sister-in-law's family. Then, Gloria will give the remaining papers to the Stanley historical society. If I find something that might interest you, I'd be glad to make copies and mail them.... where should I send them?
I will visit Gloria next Wednesday. And probably a few more times before we return to Florida, which may not be until sometime in October. We haven't set a date.

PS: Until a year ago, my daughter. Katherine Chaffee, lived in San Jose in Silver Creek Valley. Now she is in Loomis, CA near my other daughter, Susan Foondos, who lives in Sacramento.
I lived in Stockton for 25 years; was married to Gus Mellis (who is now deceased.) Also have 2 sons; one in North Carolina; other in Seattle area.
