- Mrs. William Mattern, (Shirl ey Hietpas), age 54, passed away Friday, September 16th, 1988, at home aft er a five year battle with cancer. She was born August 4th, 1934, in Litt le Chute, the daughter of William and Margaret Verhagen Hietpas. We ask ed why did have to be like this, there was no answer. As we tearfully wat ched her active life fade away, we realized how special to each o ne of us she really was. Day passed on as we realized there was no cur e, and life would be different for us someday. We were scared and so w as she, but she was now in God's hands, even more now than before. We kn ew she would soon be leaving as, for a life beyond our earthly comprehensi on. She would now be living with those that have left ahead of us al l. We knew she would be happy and active once again, she would be OK. T he memory of her special touch will live in our hearts forever. Until we m eet again, she is now at peace forever, safely home in heaven. She marri ed William Mattern, August 21st, 1954. She worked for Best Bakery in Mena sha until her illness and was a loving wife and mother at home. Shirley w as a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church, Menasha. She enjoyed fishin g, hunting and winter sports. Survivors include her husband, William; a s on, Glenn; three daughters and sons in law: Donna and Steven Hetzel, Ji ll Mattern and her fiancee, Don Tschirgi; Dorrie and Stan Houk; four grand children: Olivia and Noah Mattern, Angela and Stephanie Hetzel; her mothe r, Mrs. Margaret Penning's, Kaukauna; five brothers and four sisters in la w: Arthur and Irene Hietpas, Appleton; Paul and Ethel Hietpas, Coleman; Ow en and Irene Hietpas, of Leesburg, Fla.; Mark and Ruth Hietpas, Little Chu te; Dennis Hietpas, Kaukauna: three sisters and brothers in law: Mrs. Hen ry Tatro; Betty and Casey Vandersanden, Little Chute; Margie Hietpas, Kauk auna; and a good friend Carol. She was preceded in death by her fathe r; an infant son, Douglas; a sister, Bernice Larson; and a brother, Willia m. Funeral services will be Monday September 19th, 1988 at 10:30 a. m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Menasha. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cem etery Menasha.
