- Gerald E. Lemerond, 81, Green Bay, died Monday evening October 29, 2012, at home after a brief illness. He was born July 24, 1931, in Winona, MN, to Earl and Louise Lemerond and later grew up in Wisconsin Rapids and Green Bay. Gerald graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1949 and was a Korean War Veteran, serving with the Army's 2nd Infantry Division as a B.A.R. Gunner, where he learned the life long lesson to "always carry plenty of ammunition".
On June 4, 1954, Gerald went to work for the Green Bay & Western Railroad as a Locomotive Fireman and was promoted to Engineer on June 29, 1961, and retired on June 1, 1993 after 39 years of service. He was a strong union man and General Chairman for the United Transportation Union Local #720 representing enginemen.
Gerald was active in conservation organizations, and the Garden Club. He enjoyed bicycling and bird watching.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Beatrice; two sisters, Patricia and Kathleen and brother, Thomas and three sons and their families, Joe and Judy Lemerond and step-grandchildren, Mike and Jodi Boutott, Stormee and Steve Genz and Rayne and Skyler, Matt Boutott and Kimberly Dixon and Kylee, James and Vanessa Boutott and Adrianna and Alexander, and Greg and Shirley Lemerond and grandchildren, Jacquelyn and Joseph, Chris and Michelle Lemerond and grandson, Samuel.
A good man who had talent for enjoying the simple pleasures; planting a tree, feeding the birds, a walk in his garden, the first ripe tomato, the arrival of the seed catalogs, the funny paper (Zitts and Pickles, his favorites), crossword puzzles, trips to Mackinac Island, reading The Town Crier. He was well respected, unfailingly polite and had a un-erroring memory. He loved the written and spoken word. He was a happy man when he had a glass of wine and a book in his hands. He was underappreciated but never felt that way. He enjoyed the many rides past, "The Ancient Land of the Lemerond's" on the shore of Duck Creek. He was a man who thanked his mother for the gift of life.
