- Dorothy Knabenbauer, age 79, of Appleton, was called to her heavenly home on Thursday morning, May 3, 2007. Dorothy was born in Kaukauna, on August 1, 1927, the last of eight children born to the late Martin and Hattie (Hooyman) Haen. As a young mother, she worked at various area restaurants, both waiting on tables and serving as the hostess. When the children were just a bit older, she began work at the telephone company in Appleton. She retired after nearly twenty years in the records department. Dorothy enjoyed traveling, and the cabin up north. On June 9, 1972, Dorothy married Ken Knabenbauer; he preceded her in death in 1997.
She is survived by a son, Jeff (Kerry) Scherer, Clintonville; a son-in-law, Dave Pecks, Appleton; a stepdaughter, Kathy Rathsack, New London; four grandsons, Jim (Debbie) Huolihan, Menasha; Brian Huolihan, Appleton; Ryan (Katie) Scherer, Appleton and Tom Rathsack Jr.; granddaughters, Jessica (Jason) Garvin, Madison and Carrie (Kory) Schneider, Neenah; a granddaughter-in-law, Sarah Huolihan, Menasha; five great-grandchildren, Shawn Huolihan, Danielle Huolihan, Colin Huolihan, Doug Madel, and Madalyn Scherer; a sister, Catherine Beyer, Neenah; a sister-in-law, Hazel Haen, Kaukauna; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Lynn Pecks in 2006; a grandson, Tom Huolihan; brothers: Art (Dorothy) Haen, Bernard Haen, and Clem Haen; sisters: Anna Haen, Mae (Hans) Buetow, and Martha Poppe; and a brother-in-law, Herb Beyer.
In keeping with Dorothy's wishes, she will be cremated and laid to rest with her parents at St. Mary Cemetery in Kaukauna. A private service for the comfort of the family was held at the Wichmann Funeral Home in Appleton.
