- MARTIN COONEN, who during a long, useful and eventful life has been intimately associated with the agricultural, public and professional interes ts of Outagamie county, is now the owner of sixty-three acres in section 3 3, Buchanan township, and is not only known as a pioneer farmer and veteri nary surgeon and as a publicspirited citizen who always has had the best i nterests of his community at heart, but is honored and respected as a vete ran of the great Civil War. Born December 22, 1840, in Zeeland, Holland, M r. Coonen is a son of James and Cornelia (Jacobs) Coonen, natives of Holla nd, where Jacob Coonen was the proprietor of a hotel and also owned a far m. In June, 1848, the family came to America, locating on a partly develop ed farm in Little Chute township, where Jacob- Coonen's death occurred abo ut 1855, when he was only fortyseven years of age. After his demise his wi dow took her family to Buchanan township, buying sixty-three acres of la nd where Martin Coonen now resides, and here her death occurred in 1882, w hen she was eighty-three years old, and her burial took place in. Buchan an Cemetery, her husband having been interred in Little Chute. The early d eath of Martin Coonen's father caused him to go to work at an early age, a nd he was not much past fourteen years old when he started to employ himse lf at whatever honest occupation presented itself. He continued thus, prin cipally at farming, until 1862, in which year he enlisted for service in t he Union army, becoming a member of Company F, Fiftieth Regiment, Wiscons in Volunteer Infantry, with which organization he served until the clo se of the war. His regiment, starting from Camp Randall, went to St. Lou is for ten days, went thence to Memphis, Tennessee, returned to St. Lou is and marched through Missouri, visiting Jefferson City, Kansas City, S t. Joseph and Waverly; proceeded to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, with the Thi rd Cavalry, and two months later were sent to protect the settlers from t he Indians, and it was while there that the war closed. The regiment, orig inally with Sherman's army, was detailed to scout duty, and shifted from o ne army to another.Mr. Coonen was finally mustered out in Madison, in June, 1866.After his return from the war, Mr. Coonen resumed farming operations on t he old homestead, where he was married November 19, 1866, to Miss Johan na C. Verstegen, who was born June 29; 1849, daughter of Arnold and Anna M ary (Beeman) Verstegen, natives of Holland, who were married in that count ry and came to America in 1850, settling in Little Chute on a farm. The mo ther died in 1862, aged forty-two years, and the father passed away in 190 0, at the age of eighty, and both are buried in Little Chute. They had a f amily of eleven children, of whom Mrs. Coonen was the fourth in order of b irth. Mr. and Mrs. Coonen have had eleven children: the eldest, Mary Cathe rine, married Michael Whiteman, and died February 23, 1890, aged twenty-t wo years, leaving one child; and is buried in Buchanan Cemetery; James L ., is married and living in Calumet county and has six children; George W ., also married and living in Calumet county, has four children; John A. d ied in infancy; Annie M. married J. Beelen of Buchanan township, and has f our children; Cornelia C., married Henry Van Abel of Kaukauna and has fi ve children: Arnold A., who was married and had four children, resid ed in Taylor county until his death, which was caused by accident Septemb er 7, 1910, and he is buried in Buchanan township; John E. is single a nd a teacher in the Green Bay High school; Christina married George Vander heiden and lives in Brown county and has three children; Franklin J. is ma rried, lives in Kaukauna and has one child; and Nellie J. is single and li ving at home.Mr. Coonen has all of his land in a high state of cultivation, fenced wi th barbed and woven wire, and carries on general farming and stock raisin g, markets dairy products and rents his land on shares to his neighbor s. He milks six cows and breeds high-grade Short Horn and Holstein cattl e. For the past forty years he has been engaged in the practice of veterin ary surgery, having been the first veterinary in this community, and his r eputation in this line extends over a wide district. He is a popular comra de of the Grand Army Post, and his fellow townsmen have evidenced their es teem of his upright character and official ability by electing him to vari ous township offices, including those of school director, member of the to wnship board and chairman of the township. Mr. Coonen has seen and taken p art in the various changes that have occurred in Buchanan township and h is reminiscences of early days are particularly interesting. His person al adventures have been thrilling, and have not been confined to servi ng in the army and fighting the Indians. On August 12, 1862, while saili ng between Sturgeon Bay and Green Bay, at eight o'clock a. m., the vess el on which Mr. Coonen and his companions were sailing foundered on the we st side of the bay, and Mir. Coonen swam to the other shore, saving not on ly his own life but also that of a companion, although it took him fifte en hours to complete the ten miles. Mr. Coonen's religious connection is w ith the Roman 'Catholic Church, and he attends services at the Holy Angels congregation at Darboy.

- Name was changed from Coenen as a result of Civil war error, he is the one who lost a finger in the civil war that he received a pension for. When they sent his check they misspelled his name to Coonen so he changed it to Coonen from there on. His brothers and sisters continued to use the Coenen version.
