- Powers, Sherman J. "Ji m"Sherman J. "Jim" Powers, of Denton, Texas, age 85, passed away after a sho rt illness on Friday, June 30, 2006, in Denton, Texas. Jim was born Apr il 4, 1921, to William and Thelma Powers in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. He attend ed Kaukauna Public Schools. He met and married Maydelle Parker of Los Ange les, CA in 1942. She passed away in November, 1976. He served his count ry during World War II and was honorably discharged from the Navy in 194 6.On May 19, 1984, he married Pat Thomas of Denton. As the owner of Jim Powe rs' Motors, he became known as the "flag man" because of his fight befo re the City Council to fly the American Flag on the antennae of the vehicl es on his lot. As a full blooded Irishman, Jim was full of blarney and lov ed to tell wonderful stories-both fact and fiction. He captivated the atte ntion of his grandchildren with hours and hours of stories about "the litt le people" (Leprechauns). Jim loved to dance and he and Pat spent many go od times doing so. Possessing a beautiful, tenor voice, Jim enjoyed singi ng Irish songs at any gathering, particularly on St. Patrick's Day, his fa vorite day of the year. Jim's presence always filled the room with laughte r. He also enjoyed the game of poker and hosted a weekly game with his clo se friends. Jim was dearly loved by all his family and friends and wi ll be deeply missed.Jim is survived by Pat Powers of Denton, TX, his wife of 22 years; two bro thers: Richard Powers and wife Marie, and Wilfred Powers, all of Appleto n; former sister-in-law Olive Newman and husband Leon and former brother-i n-law Robert Parker, all of CA; three daughters: Shannon Powers and Debb ie Guidry of New Orleans, LA; Vicki Berg and husband Earl of Antioch, C A; three sons: Gary Thomas and wife Gaye of Denton, TX; Richard Thomas a nd friend Lesa Cochran of San Antonio, TX; Dave Thomas and friend Kathle en McCulloch of Mesquite, TX; four grandchildren: Amy Thomas-Varner and hu sband Matt Varner of Frisco, TX ; Desiree Thomas Phillips of Pflugervill e, TX; and Kyle and David Berg of CA.Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lorraine Damro, sister-in -law Joannie Powers, and his beloved Pekingese pets, Chang and Mindy.It was Jim's wish to be cremated and buried next to his sister. Jim's Memo rial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at ST. M ARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 119 West Seventh Street, Kaukauna. Friends will be re ceived at Church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Inur nment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Kaukauna.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to make contrib utions, do so to their favorite charity, the American Lung Associati on or the American Heart Association.Boettcher Family Funeral Home of Kaukauna is assisting the family. 766-209 9.
