Aged veteran pass es away James O'Connell Pioneer resident of Marinette dies this morning Ja mes J. O'Connell 91 passed away shortly before noon at his home on Garfie ld avenue. Mr. O'Connell had been in poor health since early summer and d eveloped a cold last Friday which hastened at the end. His passing w as a peaceful one. Mr. O'Connell was a highly respected pioneer reside nt of Marinette and a veteran of the Civil war. Use born in Kilmallock Co unty Limerick Ireland, November 8th 1845. At the age of 3 came with his p arents to the United States where they settled in Chicopee Falls Massachus etts. After a residence of 10 years in the Bay State the family journey ed to Clyman Juneau County Wisconsin. Later he, he resided for a short ti me in Iowa. But came to Marinette on November 14, 1872. Thus having compl eted a residence of 64 years in the city. He was employed for a time aft er he came here on the construction of the Northwestern Railroad from Mari nette Escanaba. He was the town marshal when Marinette was incorporat ed as a city in 1887. Automatically becoming the first chief undersheri ff of the county for a time and was one of the first members of the G.A. R. in this city. He married Miss Margaret Cox of Appleton Wisconsin M ay 7, 1881. The latter passed away in August 1928.. He is survived by t he following children; James M O'Connell, Park Falls Wisconsin, David J. O 'Connell, Nahma, Mich., George E. O'Connell and Mary and Margaret O'Conne ll of this city and the Rev. William A. O'Connell, O.P. Washington D.C .. One brother David of Kaukauna Wisconsin and one sister Mrs. Catheri ne O'meara of Juneau Wisconsin also survive. The remains to be taken fr om the McLain funeral home to the family home 1151 Garfield Avenue Saturd ay afternoon. The funeral will occur Monday morning at 10:00 from Our La dy of Lourdes Church The obsequies will be under military auspices.
Enlisted at SixteenWith the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. O'Connell, then 16 years of age, w as seized with the desire to enlist in the Union army. Accompanied by a f riend he set out to "hoof-it" 45 mi. to Janesville to join the cavalry b ut fate played a hand and he finally entered the infantry. All went we ll until one day when his company was stationed at Camp Randall he sudden ly saw his parents entering the encampment. "What did he do then" he w as asked. "I got into my tent and covered myself up with straw and blanke ts but to no avail. They took the home, but took me only five days to r un away again." This time his efforts met with more success and he join ed the first Wisconsin Cavalry Company B. On November 19th, 1864 he was d etailed to Louisville Ky, and from there his company advanced to Mumplesvi lle where they took part in a bloody battle. He also fought at West Poin t, Ga. with Sherman and when peace was declared he narrowly missed bei ng in the group the captured Jeff Davis. Mr. O'Connell had gro wn to be a familiar figure in Marinette. He was kindly and manner and pop ular with all who knew him. He was a high type citizen and during his lo ng residence here had an important part in the civic life of the communit y. His passing will be a source of regret to the entire community as he w as revered by all.

- 1881 The Juneau Telegram dated May 20th, 1881 Mr. James O'Connell, of June au, was married last Saturday, May 7th, at the Catholic Church in mopes i s, by the Reverend Father Riley, to Mrs. Maggie Cox, a daughter of Mr. Jo hn Cox, one of the oldest and most substantial citizens of the town of Mer ton. A sister of the bridegroom, Miss Lizzy O'Connell, acted as a bridesm aid, and a brother of the bride acted as brides man. The bride looked lov ely in a dark olive green and servers, walking length, with trimmings of b rooded at Saxon and fringe to match. The bridesmaid was becoming dress ed in a blue cashmere and satin dress. At the close of the ceremony the c ompany of relatives and friends of the two contracting parties adjourn ed it to the residence of the bride's parents or a sumptuous repast wiza rd of that their pathway through life may be strewn with roses, and that a ll their hopes be realized, is the wish of numerous friends.
