  Written by John M. Milner - Clarence Franklin Currie was born on December 30, 1878 in Glencoe, Ontario. In 1902, at the age of 23, Currie made his major league debut on April 2, 1902 for the Cincinatti Reds. Currie would appear in 10 games for the Reds, winning 3 but losing 2. He started 7 of the games and complete 6 of them, including a shut out. He would give up just 1 home run and have an Earned Run Average (ERA) of 3.72 over 65 1/3 innings. The St. Louis Cardinals purchased Currie from the Cincinatti Reds in August 1902. He would appear in 15 games for the Cardinals, going 7-5. Twelve of the fifteen games he appeared in, he would do so as a starter. His ERA of 2.60 over 124 2/3 innings pitched was good enough to lead the team in that category. As the number five starter in a 6-man rotation for the Cardinals, he would also lead the team in shutouts (2) and hits per 9 innings pitched (9.02). However, Currie's performance would not be enough to make the 1902 Cardinals anything resembling a contending team. The Cardinals would go 56-78 on the season, finishing 6th in the National League, 44 games back of the Pittsburgh Pirates. 4 Currie got off to a horrendous start in 1903 for the Cardinals. He went 4-12 in 22 games (16 of them being starts), although he would throw 13 complete games, and a shutout. In 148 innings pitched for St. Louis, Currie's ERA would be 4.01. By mid-season, he had been sold to the Chicago Cubs. He would appear in just 6 games for the Cubs. He would start three games and complete two of them. In 33 innings pitched, his ERA for the Cubs would be 2.97. Unfortunately, he would give up 7 home runs, enough to tie him for second in the National League for most homers allowed. With the Cubs, Currie would be hitting as well as he ever would in his career. He hit .417 with 3 RBI while with the Cubs. Overall, Currie would hit .155 for his career. While St. Louis would end up in last place in the National League, (46 games out of first), Currie's new team finished third, just 8 games back of Pittsburgh. During his brief two-year career, Currie pitched 371.1 innings in the majors, and finished with a record of 15 wins and 23 losses (a .395 winning percentage) and earned an ERA of 3.46. Hitters would hit .277 against him Clarence Currie died on July 15th, 1941 in Little Chute,Wisconsin.
