- Joseph A. Mueller, 94, Chilton, died on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at the Calumet Medical Center in Chilton. He was born March 16, 1916, in Charles town, son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Heimann) Mueller. He married Ethelreda S. Ditter on Oct. 20, 1943, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marytown. The couple farmed together for 40 years in the Town of Charlestown until they moved to Chilton.
Although he left the farm, his passion for farm work never ended. He continued to read farm journals, watch commodity prices, and plant and tend to his garden every year. Joe was a perpetual hard worker who made sure to see all projects through to the end. He constantly pushed himself to become better and more efficient in all he did.
He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, formerly St. Martin Parish, where he also served as Trustee and on the Parish Council. He belonged to the Charlestown Holy Name Society, the Catholic Knights Branch #194, helped to organize the Lake to Lake Dairy Cooperative and helped raise funds for the Calumet Memorial Hospital.
Joe was a tremendous and avid Skat and Sheepshead player and enjoyed playing in tournaments throughout the Calumet County rural area. His Catholic faith was extremely important to him and he made sure to pray the Rosary every morning and volunteered countless hours at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel over the past 13 years.
In whatever free time Joe could find, he would solve crossword puzzles, piece together jig-saw puzzles, and through the winter months, crack hickory nuts for hours on end. He was an avid sports fan who liked watching football and baseball, although his family is unsure if he liked rooting for the Cubs more, or rooting against the Brewers more, just to get a rise out of those around him. For all of his teasing, he will be remembered fondly as the quintessential family man who cherished the time he could spend with his wife, children and grandchildren. Nobody will ever forget his marvelous stories and his ability to recall events, whether important or mundane, that happened throughout his life.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel; seven children, Raymond (Judith) Mueller, Joseph (Peggy) Mueller, Frederick Mueller, Tony (Shortie) Mueller, Ken (Nancy) Mueller, Susan Mueller, Luann Mueller; a daughter-in-law, Doris Mueller; 22 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sister Joan Frances Mueller; and three sisters-in-law, Ruth Mueller, Cyrilla Faust and Romilda Ditter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael Mueller; his brothers and sisters, infant sister, Victoria, Siegfred, Magdalene, Cecelia, Edward; and his brothers-in-law, Joseph Faust, Victor Propson, and Willfrid Ditter.
Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at the Good Shepherd Catholic Parish (54 E. Main St.) in Chilton, with the Rev. Bob Kollath officiating. Burial will be in the St. Martin Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, and on Thursday at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. A Rosary and a Parish Vigil service will be held Wednesday evening at the funeral home at 8 p.m.
