- Kenneth E. Hurlbut Jr., age 75, of Waupaca, passed away unexpectedly and was reunited in Heaven with his soul mate, Marjorie on Wednesday, January 16, 2008. Ken was born in Stevens Point on December 13, 1932, the son of the late Kenneth & Elizabeth (Swan) Hurlbut. On June 11, 1955, Ken married Marjorie Schmahl at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waupaca and she preceded him in death on March 10, 2007. Ken graduated from UW-Stevens Point with a teaching degree and later added a master's degrees in Mathematics and Administration. He began his thirty-three year teaching and coaching career at Wisconsin Rapids High School. In 1967, Ken moved to Glenbrook South High School, Glenview, IL, and there also became the head football coach. In 1975, Ken retired from coaching and teaching to become the full time Coordinator of Athletics. In 1988, Ken and Marge retired to the Chain O' Lakes where he enjoyed fishing and boating, especially pontoon boat rides around the lakes. He spent hours pulling family and friends behind his speed boat on ski's, wake boards and tubes. Not one to take life easy, Ken became heavily involved in local Waupaca politics, including chairman of the Town of Dayton, Waupaca County board member and a board member of the Lake District. He is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Waupaca.
Ken is survived by his daughter, Susan (Brian) Feest, Appleton; his son, Mark (Karen) Hurlbut, Muskego; four Grandchildren: Brianna & Jared Feest and Paul & Trey Hurlbut. Also surviving are his sisters: Shirley (Earl) Newby, Kenosha; Betty (Robert) Kessler, Waupaca; and his brothers: Dave (Jan) Hurlbut, Lakewood and Rick Hurlbut, Waupaca, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services will be on Monday, January 21 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waupaca, with Reverend Nathan Liedtke, officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Rural Cemetery in the Town of Dayton. Visitation will be on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. A Memorial Fund has been established in Ken's name. Holly Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
