- Helen B. Smarzinski, Menasha, age 98, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 14, 2007, at St. Paul Elder Services in Kaukauna. She was born March 21, 1909, in Appleton, daughter of the late Henry and Emma (Kubitz Raddatz) Bastjan. Helen graduated from Zion Lutheran Grade School and then Appleton High School in 1927. She married Stanley Smarzinski on September 29, 1934. He preceded her in death on November 14, 1986. Helen was employed with Wisconsin Telephone Co. She enjoyed cooking, baking and crossword puzzles. Helen was a member of St. Timothy Ev. Lutheran Church in Menasha where she was active in their Bible Study and their United Lutheran Church Women (Women's MissionarySociety) Group. She was also a member and past president of the Menasha Homemakers Club and the Bette Rebekah Lodge of Menasha.
Survivors include three children: Gary (Susan) Smarzinski, Kaukauna; Robert(Coleen) Smarzinski, Menasha; Janet (Robert) Larsen, Fond du Lac; five grandchildren: Heather Larsen, Appleton; Eric Larsen, Kaukauna, Cory Smarzinski, Luverne, MN; Todd Smarzinski, Menasha; Jill Smarzinski, Kaukauna; and a brother, Carl (Edna) Bastjan, Kaukauna.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille (Willard) Ferron; an infant brother, Vernon; and three half sisters: Lillian (Henry) Thiel, Meta (Harry) Maes, and Gertrude (Lewis) Jury; and a half brother, Edward Bastjan.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 17, 2007, at Menasha's Westgor Funeral Home with the Rev. David Skarsten officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Appleton. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Timothy Ev. Lutheran Church, the Neenah-Menasha VNA or the St. Paul Home in Kaukauna.
The family would like to thank the care givers at St. Paul Home where Helen resided for the past three years.
