- MANAWA, WI.--- PROMINENT FARMER DIES. Charles R. Cuff, farmer, in the town of Little Wolf, died suddenly at his home a mile east of Manawa. He was 71 years old. Charles Raymond Cuff wns born in the township of Hortonla. Outagamie county, Dec. 6,1854. His early days were spent near Hortonville with his parents, who were sturdy Irish immigrants. The crude country school, with its split log benches, furnished the background, for his early education. He afterwards attended Appleton high school and Lawrence college. In the winter of 1882 he taught the upper department of the two room school in Manawa, Before starting his life vocation of farming he was engaged for some time as a cruiser in the northern woods. Later, he owned and operated a cheese factory on his farm four miles west of Hortonville. HELD TOWN OFFICE. He was married to Miss Frances Margaret Ritchie on April 25, 1882, and, in 18(93?)he and his family moved to their present farm home a mile east of Manawa. Until incapacitated by poor health, he was active in church and community work. He was a student of history and literature and was an authority on the early frontier history of Wisconsin, He was town clerk for many years. Surviving Mr. Cuff, besides his wife, are his children, Emma of Rice Lake, Jennie of Manawa, Raymond of Kansas City, Mo,; Alice, Mrs. George Hu- ber of Foxhome, Minn; Alexander of Detroit, and Stuart of Manawa; three sisters, Mrs. James Stimson of Appleton, Mrs. W.S. Patterson of Wausau, and Mrs, A. W. Millerd of Madison, and one brother, George A, Cuff of Hortonville. Funeral services were held from the Methodist Episcopal church here. Rev. L.E. Jones officiating, and in- terment was in the Manawa cemetery.
