- Edward L. Pouwels, age 89, of De Pere, Wis. and Salt Springs, Fla.; passed away on Aug. 29, 2007, at the loving home of his son, Jim. He was born on Feb. 25, 1918, the son of Frank and Jennie Pouwels. While he was born in Appleton, Ed lived most of his life in De Pere. Proudly serving his nation in World War II for several years, Ed served as an officer for two terms with the 32nd Field Artillery Division in New Guinea, and Australia, during which he had the opportunity to serve as a personal guard for General MacArthur. He spent his career in banking, retiring as President of the State Bank of De Pere (now Associated Bank). In 1987 he was recognized for 50 years in banking. He was actively involved in many organizations, often serving in leadership roles, including the Kiwanis and Golden Key Clubs, De Pere Chamber of Commerce, St. Mary's Church of De Pere, banking organizations and many other organizations to improve the community. These efforts were recognized when he received the St. Norbert College Alma Mater Award in 1976 and De Pere's Outstanding Citizen in 1981.
Ed is survived by his wife, Elvira "Vi;" his children, Marie and Jim Elifritz, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; John and Lynn Pouwels, Franklin, Maine; Carole and Ron VandeWalle, Fish Creek; Joe and Mellie Pouwels, Naperville, Ill.; Jim and Joyce Pouwels, De Pere and Janet and Jay Loewi, Madison; along with 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and Vi's children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by Ingrid (Thunberg) Pouwels, his wife of 49 years; his parents; and his grandson, Joshua Pouwels.
Friends may call at the Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Ave., on Monday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wake service 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Community, Pope John XXIII Circle, off Sportsman Drive in the Town of Ledgeview. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with Fr. David Duffeck officiating. Burial in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
