- James F. Schreiter, 66, formerly of Appleton, died peacefully Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at his home on Lake DuBay near Mosinee, Wisconsin. He was born October 15, 1943, in Appleton, the son of the late Robert and Ruth (Clancy) Schreiter. Jim graduated from Xavier High School in 1962, then entered an apprenticeship to eventually become a Master Electrician. On October 19, 1963, Jim married Linda Lee Weber in Appleton, where together they raised their four children.
During the 1970s and 1980s in Appleton, Jim participated wholeheartedly with The Appleton Jaycees, became an elected Alderman for the 5th Ward, and enthusiastically ran for Assemblyman. He worked as an electrician for more than 40 years, primarily with Stephenson's Electric and Town and Country Electric, before retiring in January 2009. During these years, Jim thoroughly enjoyed being on or near the water, spending many weekends boating, fishing, playing cribbage, and cooking out at "The Cottage" on Lake Winneconne with his children, friends and family.
Not surprisingly, Jim moved to the Lake DuBay area in 1987 to live on the water. Here "Captain Jim" as his grandchildren affectionately called him, or "Skipper" as his lakeshore friends named him, became skilled at refurbishing old wooden boats, telling tall tales, cruising on his pontoon, and enjoying corn roasts, grilled burgers and brats. "Captain Jim" loved taking his children and grandchildren boating in his Thompson woody while pulling the tube or waterskiing on classic wood skis. He enjoyed teaching children of all ages the basics of fishing, how to spot eagles and other wildlife. "Captain Jim" had the pleasure of spending many Sundays with his son Patrick and his two girls and was excited that son Gregg and his family were planning a day of fishing.
With friends he enjoyed golfing, watching Packers games, scouting wooden boat shows, crafting homemade lures, and "hanging out on the deck". His last month was especially filled with love and joy as he had expressed thankfulness that his daughter Tammy had moved back to Wisconsin, and had smiled proudly walking his daughter Jenny down the aisle at her wedding on Sunday, June 27.
Survivors include his four children: Gregg (Wendi) Schreiter, Greenville; Patrick Schreiter, Appleton; Jennifer Schreiter (Tricky) Pethan, Chilton; and Tammy Schreiter, Madison; his ex-wife Linda (Weber) Dammerich, Appleton; six grandchildren: Trenton and Kennedy Schreiter, Neceda and Seneca Schreiter, and Eden and Gavin Pethan; two brothers: Paul Schreiter, Appleton; Robert (Michelle) Schreiter, Jr., Franklin; two sisters: Sandy (Pat) McGilligan, Neenah; and Pat Murphy, Appleton; nieces: Nicole (Dan) Weber; Abby Schreiter; nephews: David (Doreen) Falcus; Christopher Falcus; Scott Schreiter; Riley Schreiter; Glenn (April) Hoppin; Dan (Nadine) Hoppin; Paul Hoppin; and many grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth (Clancy) and Robert Schreiter; two brothers-in-law: Pete Hoppin and Steven Murphy.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Diane and Carl Sennholz, Jay and Jody Cheville, Kent and Ronnie Meyer and "Skipper's" many other friends along the lakeshore for their kindness, friendship and compassion.
A Memorial Service for Jim will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010, with Rev. Martin Ruge officiating at Valley Funeral Home. Friends may visit the family from 3 p.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund is being established.
