- Michael (Mike) Earl Arendt, 81, Hortonville, lost his brief battle with cancer on August 25, 2009. He was born in New Franken, WI, to the late Michael R. and Philomema (Brice) Arendt on November 30, 1927. Mike married the former Dorothy Zipper in Green Bay on April 12, 1956. Together they were proprietors of Arendt's Meat Market in Hortonville for 35 years. Mike loved family, friends and life in many ways, always quick with a funny story and being the coolest grandpa ever. Mike is infamous for his homemade sausage, but his other unlimited interests were old cars — the bigger the better. He also enjoyed coveting anything to tinker with, never resisting a bargain, showing his collection of nearly everything, telling yet another funny story, and loving his new found "career" in dairy farming. Mike had a big heart and possessed the ability to find someone who needed help, and always had a way to make their lives better. If you felt he was your best friend, he was.
Mike is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. (Rogene) Arendt, Appleton; daughters and sons-in-law: Mary (Bruce) Stiltjes, Dale; Julie (Ryan) Vanden Heuvel, Shiocton; seven grandchildren: Michael G. (Andrea) Arendt, Andrew Arendt (Stacy Simon), Mitchell and Riley Stiltjes, Grace Mae, Henry and Oliver Vanden Heuvel; a great-granddaughter, Gabriella Arendt; three sisters: Anna "Tootie" Derricks, Denmark; Gladys Beaudin, Two Rivers; Bernice Derricks, De Pere; three sisters-in-law, Mable Arendt, Millie Okray and Marilyn Zipper, Green Bay; further survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Dorothy Mae; his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law: Goldie and Dorothy, Raphael, Armin and Clara, John (Butch) and Evelyn, Leonard and Leona; sister, Joyce and Norman Michiels; four brothers-in-law, Harry and Robert Derricks, Donald Zipper and Walter Okray.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Friday, August 28, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. with Fr. Norm Krutzik officiating at the Hortonville Community Hall (312 W. Main Street); a celebration of Mike's life will follow until 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
