- Roger J. Yakel, 78, Appleton, formerly of Green Bay, passed into eternal life surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Cherry Meadows Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Cecil, WI, to the late Leonard and Bernice (Hall) Yakel on July 28, 1931. Roger grew up in Suring and graduated from high school in 1949. He married his high school sweetheart, May Lazansky, in 1952. They had three beautiful children. She preceded him in death in 1964. He married Rosemary (Ramer) Zens in 1965 and were soon blessed with a son who completed their wonderful family. She preceded him in death in 2002. On April 23, 2005, he married Margaret Stumpf. Roger and Margaret enjoyed time together with their children, grandchildren, and friends, as well as, traveling and spending time at Grindle Lake. Roger started working in 1951 as a sweeper and worked his way to President at Olson Trailer and Body retiring in 1995. He was a past member of the Elks Club, Snow Angels Snowmobile Club, and Crooked Lake Volunteer Fire Dept. He also volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul and Bellin Hospital. Roger loved his family vacations with his children. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying trout fishing, trapping, golfing, deer hunting and pheasant hunting in South Dakota. He loved Packer games, parking cars in his yard and all the friends he made doing so.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret, Appleton; children: Craig (Shelly) Yakel, Luxemburg; Renee (Bill) Smits, De Pere; Rae (Bob) Wetzel, Green Bay; Curt (Margaret) Yakel, Green Bay; Margaret's children: Carrie (Larry) Smits, De Pere, and Chayne (Tammy) Kosloske, Greenville; grandchildren: Corey, Ryan, Alyssa and Miranda Yakel, Josh Romuald; Steven and Scott Smits; Michael and Rachel Wetzel; Connor and Meghan Yakel; Bridgette, Kyler and Gracie Smits; Bruk and Zachary Kosloske; a sister, Joyce (Bill) Hewitt, Sheboygan; sisters-in-law: Bernice Yakel, Betty Doperalski and Grace Gallenberger; in-laws: Roy (Hallie) Stumpf, Mae Stellmacher and Robert (Jeanne) Stumpf. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, May Yakel; second wife, Rosemary Yakel; a brother, Hollis "Issy" Yakel and a brother-in-law, Harwood Stellmacher; sisters and brothers-in-law: Ray and Elsie Herr, Elmer Lazansky, Milton and Gladys Lazansky, Larry and Mable Stodola, Bill and Germaine Lazansky, Chester "Chubby" Doperalski, Jim Gallenberger, Norbert "Pete" and Adeline Doperalski and Norman and Carol Oshefsky, as well as, other family and friends.
A Mass of Resurrection for Roger will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2010, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church (1810 N. McDonald St.), Appleton, with Rev. Gerald Falk officiating. Interment will be in Allouez Catholic Cemetery, Green Bay. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and Thursday morning at church from 10 a.m. until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established.
The family would like to thank BrightStar Healthcare, ThedaCare at Home Hospice and Cherry Meadows Hospice for their wonderful care of Roger and his family.
Roger's children would like to thank Margaret for her tender and loving care of their father. Once again, he found a love he missed after our dear mother passed away. We are so grateful for that. She made him very happy.
