- Daniel R. Matthies, age 74 of Two Rivers, died late Friday night, June 6, 2003 at Aurora BayCare Medical Center, Green Bay. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11 at the Deja & Martin Funeral Chapel, Two Rivers. Msgr. John B. Dewane will officiate at the service. Burial of his cremated remains will follow in Forest View Cemetery, with military graveside rites accorded by the VFW & American Legion Post of Two Rivers. Dan was born January 16, 1929 in Two Rivers, a son of the late Solomon & Bernice (Wagner) Matthies. He attended public grade school in Two Rivers, and was a 1947 graduate of Washington High School, where he was also an accomplished athlete throughout his high school years. Dan was a retired U.S. Air Force Veteran, having served his country for 20 years, from 1947 to 1967. While serving with the Air Force, Dan attended the Kodokan Institute of Judo, in Tokyo, Japan, where he became a certified instructor to teach self defense in survival skills to many flight crews. Prior to becoming employed with Hamilton Industries in 1969, he earned an associate degree in engineering from LTI. He was employed as a draftsman with Hamilton's from 1969 until 1984 when health problems forced him to retire. His most memorable moments after retirement came when he would attend each of his grandchildren's sporting events. He truly was the #1 fan of his grandkids. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed photography. He is a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Two Rivers Historical Society, and the Two Rivers Senior Center. Danny was married to Lois Nate on January 3, 1952 in Two Rivers. (Survivors omitted for privacy) In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, LaDorna Martin, his brother Robert Matthies,three brothers-in-law, and a sister-in-law. The family will greet relatives & friends at the Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, Two Rivers from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.
