- John A. Bowers, 87, Menominee, MI, died Friday, June 24, 2016. He was born November 20, 1928, to Earl and Esther (Wiegand) Bowers. He was a graduate of the Class of 1948 at Kaukauna High School. On February 3, 1951, he was united in marriage to Marilyn J. Rickert at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Appleton, WI. They recently celebrated 65 years together.
John enlisted in the US Army at the age of 19, traveling to various duty stations around the world with his wife and children. He retired in 1969 achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer (CWO3). Upon his retirement, John began his second career as the Personnel & Safety Manager at Patz Sales in Pound, WI, retiring in 1993. He was an active member and former Commander of the American Legion Post 146 in Menominee, MI, as well as being a member of the Military 20 year club. He was a 3rd Degree Knight of the Menominee Knights of Columbus. John also served on the Marinette County Board, Marinette Local Area Planning Committee, and the Tri-County Safety Committee.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, Menominee, MI; daughter Cheryl (Fritz) Harris, Green Bay, WI; son Steven (Jane) Bowers, Westerville, OH; and daughter Michelle (Curtis) Sutherland, Pelkie, MI. Grandchildren Fred (Tara) Harris & their children Lily, Sebastian and William, Chicago, IL; Elinor (Shane) Breitenbach & their children Collin, Leland, Henry and Emmet, Cecil, WI ; Andrew (Courtney) Bowers & their child Ryleigh, Carrollton, TX; Alex Bowers, Westerville, OH; and Anna Bowers Sutherland, Pelkie, MI; and Sister and Brother in-law Susan and Tom Harris, Escanaba, MI; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Esther; children Michael, Joseph and Debra; a sister Florence (Harold) Drexler; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clifford (June), Russell, Robert, Donald (Alice), Frank (Mary), Earl, and Dean Bowers.
Visitation will take place at Cadieu-Thielen Funeral Home 549 10th Ave Menominee, MI on Wednesday, June 29th between the hours of 4 - 7 PM. An American Legion memorial ceremony will be held at 5 PM. The vigil prayer service will begin at 7pm with Fr. Mark McQuesten presiding. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, for the repose of the soul of John Bowers, on Thursday June 30th at 11AM at Resurrection Catholic Church in Menominee, MI. Military Honor will be performed by the Military 20 Year Club following the Mass. A lunch will follow at the American Legion Post 146 in Menominee, MI. A private burial will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Appleton, WI.
