A second continge nt was offered in the autumn of 1914. The 1st Canadian Division was form ed from units of the first contingent in January 1915, and was fighti ng in France the following month. In September 1915, the Canadian Corps w as formed, incorporating the 1st and 2nd Canadian Divisions, and the Canad ian Cavalry Brigade. Further contingents and reinforcement drafts continu ed to be sent overseas. At the time of the Armistice in November 1918, t he Canadian Corps had expanded to include four infantry divisions and cor ps units. Other Canadian units, including some artillery batteries, engine ering companies, and railway and forestry troops, served directly under Br itish command in France and Belgium. Still other units, responsible for ad ministrative support, training, forestry and medical care, served in Engla nd. The Canadian Expeditionary Force, as the army raised during the Fir st World War was designated, grew in the course of the conflict to 619,63 6, of whom 424,589 served in Europe.The Ministry of Militia and Defence (whose records are described by the Na tional Archives as Record Group [RG] 9), the predecessor of the Departme nt of National Defence today, was responsible for the recruitment, prelimi nary training and dispatch overseas of recruits for the CEF.The Ministry of the Overseas Military Forces of Canada (whose records a re described by the National Archives as RG 150) was created by an Order-i n-Council dated 28 October 1916 (P.C. 2651) to oversee the administrati on of the CEF. The Ministry functioned as the liaison between the Canadi an government and the British government, the War Office and British Gener al Headquarters. It had broad responsibility for all matters connected wi th the administration of the CEF. Attestation Papers and Enlistment FormsVolunteers for the Canadian Expeditionary Force were questioned at the pla ce of enlistment to complete the Attestation papers which included the rec ruit's name and address, next-of-kin, date and place of birth, occupatio n, previous military service, and distinguishing physical characteristic s. Recruits were asked to sign their Attestation papers, indicating the ir willingness to serve overseas. By contrast, men who were drafted into t he CEF under the provisions of the Military Service Act (1917) complet ed a far simpler form which included their name, date of recruitment, a nd compliance with requirements for registration.This series consists of approximately 620,000 individual Attestation pape rs and Military Service Act Enlistment forms. They were completed in tripl icate at the time of enrolment in the CEF. At least one copy of the Attest ation papers or Enlistment form accompanied the CEF member overseas, whe re it was placed on the individual personnel file at the Ministry of the O verseas Military Forces of Canada in London.Paper originals of the Attestation papers and Enlistment forms are describ ed by the National Archives of Canada as RG 9, II B8, Vols. 1-1256.   2002 Issued an Honorable Discharge as pursuant to Public Law 95-202, which classified service during WWII allowing for Veteran's Status. (Issued as result of inquiry for military records by grand nephew Jay Wilpolt) In World War II, ALL merchant ships and their crews were placed under mili tary control by virtue of the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, which designat ed them as "SHIPS OF WAR", and each merchant ship had a U.S. Navy Armed Gu ard Gun crew assigned to each to help defend the ship from the enemy.By the end on 1949, there were few jobs left for merchant seaman as many s hips were flying foreign flags as part of the U.S. government's Lend/Lea se program, since our allies had lost their merchant fleets during the wa r. leaving very few for American seamen to obtain jobs.During World War II, 1 out of 25 merchant seaman lost his life, this is wi th only about 250,000 serving as merchant seaman, but this doesn't cover t hose who received injuries that prevented them from returning to sea. On January19, 1988, those men who served on ocean-going merchant ships from December 7, 1941 to August 15, 1945 were granted veteran status under Public Law 95-202.

(Notation by Jay Wilpolt, my search could not find any baptismal record, however it is unclear if the Diocese archives has the complete records as some may have possibly been lost/destroyed in a church fire) Listed name as John Anthony Wilpolt. It can now be found in the state records Outagamie County, Vol 129, rec 168; listing him born on 3/11/1894. In reality he was born on Mar 22, 1896

Mr. Wilpolt is survived by three brothers Henry, Kaukauna, Albert, Minneapolis, Minn., and Richard, Cincinnati; one sister, Mrs. Edward Bay, Kaukauna. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna with internment in the parish cemetery.
