- HE SUCCUMBS TO DROPSY AFTER AN EXTENDED ILLNESS
After an illness extending over a period of six months, Daniel Low, an old and respected citizen of the town, died late Saturday evening at the home of the granddaughter, Mrs. Birdell Nelson death being caused from dropsy.
The deceased was born in Lorian Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania on September 11, 1819 a year later his parents immigrated west to Greene Township, Ashland County, Ohio where he was reared on the farm and educated in the common schools. Here he met, and in 1844 was united in marriage to Miss Catherine DeLong. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Sarah Ann (Mrs. Phillip Spurgeon) and six sons Aaron, Ephiram, Daniel, Henry and Mike: Of the children, two sons, Daniel and Henry, alone survive.
In 1854 the couple came west, making the journey partly by team and on the railway, settling in the town of Dale on a tract of land two miles west and one mile south of the village. With the exception of a few acres which were cleared this was all woods. The remainder he cleared, and he had improved his premises and added to them so that he owned a nice farm home.
Mrs. Low preceded her husband to eternal rest, departing this life in April of 1888. Toiling patiently on the old homestead until 1897. Mr. Low sold the farm to his granddaughter, Mrs. Birdell Nelson and took up his abode in the Nelson Home, and the following year made a visiting tour among relatives and friends in his old Ohio home.
Mr. Low was of a quiet, retiring disposition, a man of sterling integrity and universally esteemed. Since 1850 he was an active member of the German Reformed church.
The funeral service was held Tuesday forenoon at 10 o'clock, at the German Reformed church, Pastor Rev. Kurtz officiating. A number of relatives, old neighbors and friends of the deceased followed the remains from the home to the church and thence to the Dale Cemetery.
