- 1942 Unknown Newspaper article; Appointed Superintendent of Public Scho ol for Dunkirk, NY. Former Cloquet man is educator in New York State Thom as E. Harney, son of Mrs. and Harney, 23rd third Street, Cloquet, has be en appointed superintendent of public schools at Dunkirk, New York. Mr. H arney is a well-known former resident of Cloquet, having received his elem entary and high-school education here, and has many friends in the communi ty who will be interested in his appointment to the position. Following a re comments on Mr. Harney's appointment as taken from an article in the Bu ffalo New York Evening News: eight years of college and university traini ng and 20 years of administration and supervisory experience in the fie ld of education fit Mr. Harney for the position. A native of Dulut h, he is married and father of three children. He lives on Main Street, C larence. Following graduation from Superior State teachers College, Mr. H arney trained at the Naval Aviation School, Great Lakes Illinois. Upon co mpletion of the course he declined an instructor-ship in favor of active d uty at the U.S. Naval Air Base, Paulliac, France. After the war he was di rector of civilian rehabilitation in the detached service U.S. Navy, at Li lle, France. He was a principal of a Carlton Elementary School and the A da high-school before assuming the directorate of the Department of Educat ion at Nazareth College, Rochester. Since 1931 he has been a direct or of education at Canisius College. Mr. Harney received his bachel or of arts degree in education from the State Teachers College at Superi or Wisconsin, and his master of arts degree from the University of Notre D ame. While completing his master's thesis, he was a part-time instructo r. He also directed summer sessions at Springfield Illinois Junior Colleg e, sisters of the St. Joseph motherhouse, Pittsburgh N.Y., and Mount Carm el College in Niagara Falls Ontario. He did graduate work at the Universi ty of Rochester, Syracuse University and University of Buffalo, whe re he is a candidate for a director's for a doctor's degree in educatio n. Mr. Harney is the author of numerous magazine and technical journal ar ticles, and two of his educational workbooks have been published. He w as awarded one of 12 Notre Dame graduate school scholarships offered in na tionwide competitive examination. Mr. Harney served as vice preside nt of Buffalo chapter of progressive education association and is a memb er of the American Legion .

- He was Superintendent of Schools in Dunkirk, New YorkFrom Linda Harney Files; THOMAS E. HARNEY, SR. (1897-1989); Thomas Edwa rd Harney was born 5 (SS) or 6th (family) February 1897 in Minnesota, t he son of James Harney and Anna (Ryan). Thomas, who served in the U.S. Na vy during WWI, married Mary Agnes (Healy), daughter of Timothy. Thom as E. Sr. became the superintendent of schools in New York, and is the aut hor of three books on "Canisius College (the first published in 1971 ). He finished the third volume at age 94. - See Image Thomas Edward Harney, 92, of 880 Patricia Avenue, Dunedin, died Saturday (May 13th, 1989) at Mease Hospital, Dunedin. He was born in Cloquet, Minn., and came here in 1982 from Boca Raton. He was a superintendent of schools in Dunkirk New York. He was a memb er of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Dunedin, and the New York Sta te Teachers Association. Survivors include a son, Thomas E. Jr. of Lancaster Pa., a daughter, Margaret Pagano, of Clearwater, two brothers, Leo of Hot Springs Ark. and Martin of Montreal Wisconsin, a sister, Catharine Osbolt of Hot Springs Ark., 10 and grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
