NICHOLAS FRANK
1839 - 1910
Nicholas Frank was born 12 Jan. 1839 in Losheim, Rhein Province, Prussia. He was the 2nd child of Peter and Anna Pauls Frank. In 1840 his parents emigrated to the United States with Nicholas and his brother Mathias. They arrived in New York June 1840 and settled on an 80-acre farm his parents bought in Mequon, Wisconsin where he grew up. He went to school there and worked on his father's farm.
In July 1855 Nicholas read an article in the Menasha Advocate that the government had opened the land for what is now Calumet County to settlers at .50 cents an acre! They described the land as "some of the finest the sun ever shown upon, embracing all kinds of valuable timber and containing springs of pure sparkling and never failing water." Settlers flocked from as far as Europe by the thousands to buy this wonderful land. In 1859 Nick left home and purchased a large homestead 95 acres in Woodville near St. John.
He worked very hard clearing land for farming and for a house that he later built. He was just 21 at the time. He also sold off cleared timber to meet expenses. On April 20, 1860 Nick married his first wife, Catherine Gavelinger (Born 3-19-1835 - died 1-20-1869) At St Jacob's Church in Mequon, Wisconsin. Catherine was born in Holland. They had four children together all born in Woodville.

Catherine died Jan. 20, 1869 and on 29 November 1870 Nick married his second wife, Theresia Kneisel in St. John. Theresia was born in Austria in 1848 and died 27 Sept 1887 in St. John. With Theresia, Nick had five more children.

With the death of Theresia in Sept 1887, Nick was single for four years until 2 Sept. 1891 when he wed his third wife, Mary Krueger Roemer, at a Justice of the Peace. Mary was supposedly a mail order bride from Germany. When she arrived she had her 3-year-old son Willie with her! Willie was the same age as Joseph. His sisters mostly raised Joseph since the stepmother had her own son as her favorite. Mary returned to Germany in 1910 to visit relatives. Just a few days later, on April 26, 1910 Nick died. The news did not reach Mary until she was in New York or Germany. She apparently never returned to Wisconsin.
Nick had built a beautiful home, barn and silo and ran a very successful farm. He held the position of Assessor for many years and held the office of Justice of the Peace. He had an active part in the up building of the community (especially the building of St John's The Baptist Catholic Church) and opened his home for the first public school in Woodville. He was highly regarded by all who knew him. (See obituary for more details) Nick was buried at Breed Cemetery in Chilton.
Nick was the first of the Frank family to leave Mequon and settle in Calumet County. He was soon followed by his brother Peter, then John, and then their sister Mary (Frank) Bruehl and her husband John Bruehl. They helped one another and ran businesses together, namely the limestone quarry and the blacksmith shop in Sherwood.

Found information on the Franks I'd not known from the pap ers as well as the transcription of St Francis cemetery, i.e., Ida Frank w ho married two Micke brothers (Theodore and John) had a baby named Alois w ho was born in 1906, died 1918.I also copied the photo (on your website) because it included Ted Micke a nd also Mary Micke who was a bridesmaid of Anna Frank (daughter of John Fr ank of Kaukauna) at her wedding in Nov 1895 to Joseph Dietrich/Diedric h. Groomsman was noted as Joseph Brill who I suspect was Joseph Brue hl of Sherwood -- the brother of Nick Bruehl, photographer, artist, eccent ric! He's the son of Mary Frank and John Bruehl (a veterinarian who mov ed with Mary from Milwaukee).FYI I'm daughter of Harold Frank -> Anton Frank -> Peter C Frank (Mequo n, Sherwood, Kaukauna, Shawno). A H Frank Grocery. I'm a tad curio us re inclusion of my brother Terrence Frank and his children in your data base but not others related.I'd be pleased if you have additional material to share on Franks and rela ted lines. - Death Was Sudden. Severe Shock to the Family.Nicholas Frank Assessor of Woodville Dies Fifteen Minutes After Reaching h is Home Tuesday Night.News reached this city Wednesday morning that Nicholas Frank, assess or of the town of Woodville, dropped dead at his home at 8:30 o'clock on T uesday evening from heart trouble. Mr. Frank left home Tuesday morning f or Chilton to attend the county meeting of assessors held here. Before lea ving he bade good bye to his wife who was making preparations to leave wi th her daughter for Germany on the next train north. He arrived here at 8: 00 and shortly after the editor of The Times has a pleasant visit with hi m. He was apparently in good health, cheerful and full of reminiscen ce of early days. He atten-ded the meeting and took part in the discussi on and late in the afternoon took the freight train for Hilbert, whe re he took supper at the Behnke Hotel, leaving shortly after eight o'clo ck for his home at St. John. When he entered the home his daughter asked h im if he had supper and he responded in the affirmative. Then without warn ing he passed away. The family was greatly alarmed and summoned a physici an but when he arrived he found Mr. Frank had gone beyond recall.Nick Frank was a native of Germany and was born Jan. 12, 1839. When a sma ll boy he came to America with his parents who remained a few years in t he east and then located in Wisconsin. In 1859 they moved to Calumet coun ty and located on a farm near St. John. Mr. Frank took an active part in t he upbuilding of his town and represented it as chair-man for several term s. He also held the position of assessor for years and was considered a m an of good judgment. He held the office of justice of peace and there w as considerable business transacted in his court. He was a man who had ide as of his own and was not afraid to express his opinion.A sad incident. in connection with his death was the fact that his wife w ho started for Germany on the same morning his demise, had not yet heard o f. the deplorable occurrence. An effort was made to reach her while enrou te for New York before she embarked for Europe, but at this writing, her f amily were unable to get word to her. The funeral will be held this, Satur day morning with interment in the Breed cemetery in this city. He is survi ved by a widow, two sons, John and Joseph, of Woodville and five daughter s, Mines. Gus. Pflugrath of Milwaukee. Geo. Schwabenlancier of Woodvill e, Theo. Milkie of Buchannan and Misses Theresa and Minnie of Woodville.

About one hundred people accompanied the remains of Nick Frank to the Breed cemetery at Chilton Saturday. The pall bearers were John and Nick Schreiner, Mike Halbach, Frank Denzel and Mike Fisch, Sr. Those from abroad who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Mike Loerke, Lizzie Gevelinger, Mr. Bruehl and family of Sherwood, Jacob Frank of Thiensville, Peter Frank, wife and daughter of Shawano, John Frank of Kaukauna, Theo. Mielke and family of Dundas, John Frank and daughter of Michigan, Jos. Davies and Theresia Frank of Marshfield, Minnie Frank of Plymouth, Gust. Pflugrath and wife of Milwaukee.
