- Hammen, Eugene M. "Puna", Lit tle Chute Age 70, died on Friday, June 21, 2002, at his home due to emphysema and lung cancer. He was born in Little Chute on July 30, 1931, to John J. and Cora (Van Handel) Hammen. He was a lifelong member of St. John Nepomucene Parish in Little Chute and graduated from St. John High School. He married the former Josephine Steckbauer in Oshkosh on June 3, 1961. He was employed in Advertising at The Post-Crescent in Appleton, and its affiliate, Twin-City News-Record. He also worked at Behnke Clothing, Reynebeau Clothing and, most recently, Reynebeau Floral where he loved to deliver flowers. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #4489 of Kimberly, the former Kaukauna/Little Chute Barbershoppers, and sang baritone in the Four Flats Quartet. He enjoyed golf and was a member of Fox Valley Golf Club where he was a past president and won the President's Cup trophy in 1957. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict and was a proud and active member of American Legion Post #258, where he was a past Commander and persistent raffle ticket salesman. He is survived by his wife, Jo, and three daughters and their families: Cori and Dan Romenesko and their children, Nick and Caitlin, Little Chute; Beth and Scott Schuh and their children, Jamie and Cassidy, Freedom; and Meg Murphy (special friend, Dennis Steinke) and her children, Tim and Katie, Fond du Lac, and their father, Pat Murphy. Gene is also survived by a brother, Gordon (Margaret) Hammen; four sisters, Elizabeth VanThiel, Grace Hoffman, Marion (Harold) VandenHeuvel, and his twin sister, Jane Hammen; a brother-in- law, Orville Bongers; and a sister-in-law, Betty Hammen. He is further survived by his wife's family: Mary Thompson, Margaret Steckbauer, Rita (To m) Medland, William Steckbauer, Paul (Mary) Steckbauer, Virginia (Ernst) L isek, and James Steckbauer. Also surviving are many special friends, nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Cora (Van Handel) Hammen; his wife's parents, William and Mary (Binder) Steckbauer; a sister, Barbara (Hammen) Bongers; two brothers, Roger Hammen and Carl Hammen; and three brothers-in-law, Dr. Elmer "Doc" Hoffman, Joseph VanThiel, and Marvin " Lou" Thompson, as well as some very dear friends.The Celebration of Life with Military Rites will be at St. John Nepomucene Church in Little Chute on Wednesday, June 26, at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the Verkuilen Funeral Home is Little Chute on Tuesday, June 25, from 4-8 p.m., with a parish prayer service and Military Honors at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, June 26, from 10-10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
