- Magdalen D. Pruess, age 85, of Hilbert, died on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at the Calumet Medical Center in Chilton. She was born November 30, 1924, in Kaukauna, daughter of the late Andrew & Anna (Simon) Otte. She graduated from Kaukauna High School where she was awarded the Lang Trophy for her high academic achievement. She then attended Lawrence University and UW-Green Bay. Magdalen married Arthur Pruess on June 14, 1944, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Kaukauna, and the couple farmed together in the St. John area until moving to Hilbert in 1959. Arthur preceded her in death on June 9, 1989. Magdalen received the designation of Certified Municipal Clerk and served as Clerk Treasurer of the Village of Hilbert for 29 years until she retired in 1991.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Hilbert where she was also a member of the Christian Women, volunteered as the Parish Treasurer, served as a Eucharistic Minister, was a member of the Parish Council and taught religion classes. Magdalen also served on the St. Mary's School Board and was librarian at school. She was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she held local and district offices and served for 25 years on the State Publication Committee. She was a 4-H leader and worked closely with the Hilbert Area Community Theatre.
She is survived by her six children: Larry (Peggy Bolle) Pruess of Two Rivers, Robert Pruess of Green Bay, Karen (Paul) Peterson of Elmwood, Daniel (Carol) Pruess of Madison, Kenneth (Susan) Pruess of Sherwood, Donna (David) Moyer of Crystal Lake, IL; her grandchildren: Suzanne (Bryan) Miller, Brett (Alissa) Pruess, Andrew and Rebecca Pruess, Stacy (Greg) Proudlock, Stephanie (Darren) Erickson, Kimberly (Mark) Hamilton, Julie and Logan Pruess, Adam (Amy) Pruess, Ryan (Angela) Pruess, Jenny Pruess, Ryan, Brooks, Cal, Brett, and Johanna Moyer; great-grandchildren: Zenyse, Abigayle, Camlynn and Chase Miller, Nicoya Pruess, Lindsay and Devon Proudlock, Abbey, Derrick and Dustyn Erickson, Tony and Samantha Park, Timmy and Summer Hamilton, Isaac, Claire, Landon and Zoey Pruess; sisters-in-law: Marie Hauser, Janice Marx, Carol Marx; brothers-in-law: Donald (Mary) Pruess, Alan (Sherry) Pruess; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three daughters: Ellen Wright, Magdalen Jean and Kathleen Pruess; a grandson: Matthew Pruess; two brothers: Richard and Elmer Otte, two sisters: Sister Aquinata Otte, Dorothy Van De Hey; two sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 17, 2010, at St. Mary Catholic Church (108 S. 6th St.) in Hilbert. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, and on Thursday at the church from 10 a.m. until 11a.m. when the service will be held.
