Willard Van Handel, 66, Freedom, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, July 7, 2011, following a short illness. He was born on March 28, 1945, in Appleton, son of Edward and Blanche (Van Asten) Van Handel.
Bill was stricken with polio in 1955. This left him confined to a wheelchair but Bill never once complained and was a great inspiration to all who have met him. He was admired by everybody, especially his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Bill loved watching the Packers, Brewers, and especially Freedom High School sports teams. He was employed by Kimberly Clark and its transitions until his retirement. He also served for the Town of Freedom town board as treasurer for many years. Bill was a very active member of St. Edwards Parish where he served as an usher and was on many different committees. He also served with the Knights of Columbus.
Bill is survived by his three sisters and four brothers: LaVerne Vandenberg, Little Chute; Lorraine Steffens, Seymour; Delores (Pat) Van De Hey, Wrightstown; Ron (Irene) Van Handel, Kaukauna; Florian (Linda) Van Handel, Kaukauna; Clarence (Sharon) Van Handel, Kaukauna; Joe Van Handel, Freedom; many special nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother Larry; brothers-in-law: Floyd Vandenberg and Joe Steffens; niece Tracy Van Handel; nephew Ricky Van De Hey; great-nephew Jeffrey Van Handel Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2011, at St. Edward Catholic Church, Mackville, with Fr. Charles Brooks officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Little Chute. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Verkuilen Funeral Home, 101 Canal Street, Little Chute and from 9:00 a.m. Monday, at the church until the time of the mass.
Bill's family would like to give a very special thank you to Dr. Avery and Dr. Jack Meyer for their loving care and support. Bill, We will truly miss you a lot. Your smile was our inspiration and good advice. Continue watching over us each day until we meet in heaven again. We will always love you. Love, your family. "There it is."
