- Coenen, Mrs. Elmer (Verena A. Coenen)
Verena Coenen, age 90, passed away Monday morning, June 4, 2007, at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah. She was born in the town of Buchanan on July 2, 1916, daughter of the late Cornelius and Rosella (Kilsdonk) Vanden Bogart. She married Elmer Coenen in Darboy on September 26, 1938; he preceded her in death in 1994. Verena will be remembered for starting the hot lunch program at Holy Angels School in 1964. She operated the lunch program until 1975 when she and Elmer relocated to Eagle River. She was a longtime member of Holy Spirit (Holy Angels) Parish, St. Ann Society, was a former member of the Kimberly Gold Agers, and also enjoyed playing sheepshead. In her free time, she involved herself with crocheting and knitting, keeping the entire family well supplied with booties, dishcloths and other articles.
Survivors include five daughters: Carol (John) Mueller, De Pere; Patricia (Eugene) Bloedorn, Two Rivers; Myra (James) Verhagen, Lakewood; Lorna (Patrick) Weyenberg, Freedom; and Phyllis (Lyle) Schmidt, Darboy; two sons: Dennis Coenen, Stephensville; Donald (Carol) Coenen, Darboy; thirty-seven grandchildren; fifty-seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; two sisters-in-law: Geraldine Coenen, Hollandtown; Cornelia Coenen, Kaukauna.
Verena was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant brother Clement, an infant sister Loretta, a sister Martha (Robert) Coenen, a daughter-in-law Donna Coenen, and a granddaughter Ann Ridgley.
The funeral liturgy for Verena will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2007 at HOLY SPIRIT PARISH - DARBOY, with Fr. Don Zuleger officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Thursday from 2 p.m. until the hour of the service.
