- Beatrice "Bea" Van Handel, 79, Appleton, passed away at Appleton Medical Center on Saturday, April 9, 2011. Bea was born on November 9, 1931, in Niagara, Wis., to the late Harry and Lena (Glockzin) Coons. She married Anthony "Tony" Van Handel on September 22, 1951, in Niagara. He preceded her in death on June 24, 1991.
Bea was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed card playing, knitting, bowling and was well known for her love of Country and Western music. Bea was a baker for a number of area restaurants and was employed at Target for over a decade.
Survivors include her five children, Tom (Cheryl) Van Handel, Mt. Blanchard, Ohio; Donna (Jim) Schoessow, Portage; Dick (Barb) Van Handel, Manawa; Ron (Beth) Van Handel, Appleton; and Lisa Van Handel, Thiensville; her 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; her sister, Beverly DesJardins, Niagara; and her brother-in-law, Sylvester (Stella) Van Handel, Ocala, Fla. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Bea was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Van Handel; her grandson, Troy Van Handel; and her great-grandson, Trent Schoessow.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 325 East Franklin Street, Appleton, with Dr. Doyle Blanton officiating. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Appleton, on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and again directly at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Appleton.
Bea's family would like to express a sincere thank you to the Reitzner family for their love and acceptance, to her card playing friends for their support and to the staff of the Sixth Floor at AMC and ThedaCare Hospice for their loving care.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Bea's name.
