- Robert M. Striegel, age 96, passed away at Appleton Medical Center on August 18, 2011, after a short illness. He was born in Mackville on the family farm, on January 12, 1915, to Peter and Anna (Sturm) Striegel. Robert attended St. Edward's Catholic grade school at Mackville, until the 8th grade. While attending grade school, Robert studied at the Lawrence Conservatory to learn to play the violin.
After graduating from St. Edward's, Robert decided to stay at home instead of going to high schools, and help his dad, Peter, on the family dairy farm. Robert grew up with a lot of Christian family values that he has passed along to his children. He helped his dad on the dairy farm, until 1941 when he took over operating a traveling feed grinder, that his father had invented. He traveled around the area to grind feed for the local farmers, for about a year. After that he took over the operations of the family dairy farm until his retirement in 1985 at the age of 70.
In 1940 he met Dorothy Ehlke at the original Cinderella Ballroom, and it was love at first sight. On October 28, 1944, he married Dorothy, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, in Appleton. They shared 59 years together, until her death in Dec. 2003.
Robert was a lifelong and oldest member of St. Edward's Catholic Church, at Mackville. He was a trustee for the parish for more than 3 decades, and was the parish grave digger for more than 40 years. Robert loved his dairy farm, his Allis tractors, gardening and seeing his crops grow. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.
Robert is survived by his four children; Mary Countney, of Appleton; Barbara (Don) Koller of Neenah; Shirley (Warren) Thomson, Appleton; and James Striegel, Appleton.
Robert is further survived by his grandchildren; Jeffery & (Terri) Countney, Appleton, and their children, Daali Kester, Mason and Quinn Countney; Joseph & (Cindy) Countney, Hortonville, and son William; Gregory & (Monica) Koller, Darboy, and their children, Nic, Mitchell, Matthew and Morgan Koller; Keith & (Tanya) Koller, Neenah, and their children, Taylor and Amber Koller; Steven Koller, Appleton and (special friend Karen and her children, Jessica, Valerie and Calvin); Diane Thomson, Menasha, and her daughter Jadie; and Denise Thomson, Kimberly, and son Ethan May.
He is further survived by his sister Mary Hopfensperger, Kaukauna, and sister-in-law Mildred Nackers of Kimberly. and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, an infant sister, Martha; his parents, Peter and Anna Striegel; sister, Estelle Moehring, and brother-in-laws Florian Moehring, Earl Hopfensperger, Charles Nackers, Robert Ehlke and his wife Pat; Walter Ehlke and his wife Mildred; and God child Robert Moehring, and Special friends Ralph and Evelyn Lex.
Visitation for Robert will be held at the Valley Funeral Home 2211 N. Richmond Street Appleton, WI, on Sunday August 21, 2011, from 4-8 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. by Deacon Jeff Hofacker. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday August, 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Edward's Catholic Church at Mackville, on Hwy 47, with the Rev. Justin Werner and the Rev. Charles Brooks co-concelebrating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the church on August 22, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
