Mr. Paul A. Hietpas, age 87, formerly of Rost Lake, Coleman, died May 14, 2008, at the Samaritan Bethany Home in Rochester, Minn. after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. He has resided at the nursing home for the last 4 years and prior to entering the nursing home lived with his daughter in Rochester. He was born on July 1, 1920, in Vandenbroek Township, the son of the late William and Margaret (Verhagen) Hietpas. He was married to Ethel Elizabeth (Thyssen) Hietpas on Feb. 14, 1942, at St. John's Catholic Church, Little Chute, WI. Paul was a Village Trustee for 25 years in the Village of Little Chute. He owned and operated the Modern Shoe Store in Kaukauna, WI, and La Paul's Shoe Store in Menasha. After selling the businesses, he worked for Laywell Floors in Menasha, then Grode's Car Sales in Appleton later Melchert Brothers Garage in Seymour. While living in Little Chute, Paul and his wife had a summer home since April 1956 at Rost Lake and that is where they retired in 1982. Paul was a member of Ss. Francis & Wenceslaus Church, Klondike, where he was very active as a communion distributor, usher and Mass server. He also helped build the Altar for outside Masses, the cry room in the church and many more projects at church. Paul enjoyed his family, neighbors and friends. He liked fishing, hunting, riding on his pontoon boat around Rost Lake, keeping his yard up, gardening, the great outdoors; also bowling and his card club.
Survivors include two daughters; Mrs. Lotus (Jacqueline) Conrad of Rochester, Minn., and Mrs. Donald (Janet) Schlude of Chilton; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Hietpas of Appleton; two brothers; Mark (Glady) Hietpas of Little Chute and Owen (Irene) Hietpas of Leesburg, FL; sisters-in-law, Irene Hietpas and Anita Thyssen both of Appleton; brother-in-law, William Mattern and Sandra of Menasha; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, and a great-grandchild.
Friends may call at Ss. Francis & Wenceslaus Church, Coleman, from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Sat., May 17, 2008. Rev. Celestine Byekwaso will officiate with burial in St. John Catholic Cemetery, Little Chute. Pallbearers will be Paul Conrad, Philip Schlude; Rick, Chuck, Philip and Ron Hietpas. Rhodes-Charapata Funeral Home, Coleman assisted the family with arrangements.

ROCHESTER -- Paul A. Hietpas, 87, of Rochester, died May 14, 2008, at Samaritan Bethany Home, of Alzheimer's disease.
Mr. Hietpas was born July 1, 1920, in Vandenbroek Township, Wis. He graduated from St. John's Catholic School in Little Chute, Wis. He owned and operated the family business, Modern Shoe Store, in Kaukauna, Wis. He eventually sold the business and worked for car companies as a salesman. He retired in 1982 and moved to Rost Lake in Coleman, Wis.
He married Ethel Elizabeth Thyssen on Feb. 14, 1942, at St. John's Catholic Church in Little Chute. She preceded him in death on Aug. 6, 1997.
Mr. Hietpas was a member of Sts. Francis & Wenceslaus Church in Klondike, Wis., where he was a Communion distributor, usher, and Mass server. He also helped to build the outdoor altar, the cry room, and many other projects. He loved the outdoors, which included fishing, hunting, riding in his pontoon, and gardening. He also enjoyed bowling and card club.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and a great-grandchild.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Hietpas was held May 17 at Sts. Francis & Wenceslaus Church in Klondike. Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Little Chute.
Rhodes-Charapata Funeral Home in Coleman, Wis., was in charge of arrangements.
