- Ray Schommer, Kaukauna, 79, passed away on Nov. 15, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Ray was born Oct. 2, 1928, in Little Chute, the son of the late Raymond J. and Rose (Wydeven) Schommer. Ray married Karen (Wulterkens) Van Dyn Hoven on Oct. 19, 1979, in Little Chute. Ray was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna. He attended Fond du Lac Business College and served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1949. He was employed for 41 years at Thilmany Pulp and Paper and retired in 1990 as Production Control Manager. He served as President, Vice President and Secretary of the Thilmany Management Club and was a member of the Thilmany Quarter-Century Club. Ray was past Vice-President for the Kaukauna Credit Union Board of Directors and served on the board for 12 years. Ray enjoyed golf and his years with the "Swingers" Golf League at Countryside Golf Course. He was a member of Fox Valley Golf Course for many years. Ray and Karen enjoyed wintering in Punta Gorda, Fla.
Ray is survived by his wife, Karen and seven children, Michael (Kathleen) Schommer, Appleton; Patricia Schommer (Jim) Buss, New London; Lisa Schommer (Wesley) Kain, Appleton; Michelle Schommer (Randy) Springstroh, Freedom; Corinna Schommer (Travis) Jahnke, Freedom; Kari Van Dyn Hoven (Michael) Helf, Kimberly and Kelli Van Dyn Hoven (Bill) Hurst, Kaukauna. A gentle and devoted Grandpa, Ray is survived by grandchildren, Sara (Neil) Brandon; Nora Breuer; Christopher Wilcox; Heidi and Derek Buss; Ryan, Adam and Benjamin Kain; Isaac and Stephanie Springstroh; Nicholas and Jaime Schommer and Jacob Jahnke; Ryan and Jackson Helf; Tyler Bossert and Dakotah Hurst; and great-grandchildren, Athena and Ella Brandon and Christy and James Breuer. He is further survived by two brothers, Monsignor Mark Schommer, Wautoma; Dan (Lois) Schommer, Kaukauna and a sister, Sister Mary Lee Schommer, Manitowoc; sisters-in-law, Audrey (Mel) DeBroux; Kathy (Bill) Carnot, all Kaukauna; Cindy (Fred) Zwoniarkiewicz, Baraboo; brothers-in-law, Denny (Patty) Dakins; Bob (Deb) Dakins, all Kaukauna; Jerry (Tommie) Dakins, Opelika, Ala.; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Rose Schommer; a niece, Becky Schommer; a brother-in-law, Thomas E. Wulterkens and a sister-in-law, Mary Wulterkens-Harvey. Ray will be greatly missed by many and remembered by all for his friendly, fun-loving attitude and enthusiastic love of life.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday Nov. 19, 2007, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Kaukauna. The Rev. Msgr. Mark Schommer will officiate. Military rites performed by the Kaukauna VFW Post #3319 will immediately follow Mass. Friends may visit Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service directly at church.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff on 2 South and ICU at St. Elizabeth Hospital for their care and concern for Ray and would especially like to thank Dr. Patrick O'Brien and Dr. Karl Baum.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name.
