- Gilbert A. Veit, 84, Chilton, died on Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at the Calumet Medical Center in Chilton. He was born April 13, 1924, in Chilton, son of the late Henry and Amanda (Nett) Veit. Gilbert graduated from Chilton High School, Class of 1942. He served in the United States Army from 1943 through 1945 and following his discharge, he married Dolores Biese on Oct. 1, 1946. She preceded him in death on April 6, 2001.
During his career with the Postal Service, Gilbert worked as a letter carrier, clerk, Assistant Postmaster and finally retired as a rural letter carrier in 1983 after 40 years of service. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, the VFW, where he served as Commander from 1953 to 1954, and was also a member of the Wisconsin Rural Letter Carriers Association. He enjoyed playing cards, casino trips, polka music and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his children, Donna (Tim) Foster, Nebraska; Ken (Diana) Veit, Texas; Darlene Veit, Illinois; 11 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alvera Mueller, Chilton.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Alice Keuler.
Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (54 E. Main St.) in Chilton, with the Rev. Bob Kollath officiating. Entombment will be in the Knollowood Mausoleum in Manitowoc. Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton, from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009.
Memorials can be made in the name of Gilbert A. Veit to the Altrusa House of Green Bay (P. O. Box 5521, De Pere, WI, 54115). The Altrusa House is associated with St. Vincent Hospital and is a "Home Away from Home" for patients and families that need to stay overnight in Green Bay during a medical emergency.
