Mike Ludes, age 81, of Kimberly, passed away at a local nursing center on Thursday, March 18, 2010, following a brief struggle with cancer.
The funeral liturgy for Mike will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at ST. PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 E. Wallace Street in Combined Locks, with Fr. Jim Lucas officiating. Full military honors will follow the funeral service. Interment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday afternoon from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.

Ludes, Edmund R. "Mike"
Mike Ludes, 81, Kimberly, passed away at a local nursing center on Thursday, March 18, 2010, following a brief struggle with brain cancer. Mike was born in Duluth, Minn., on Dec. 1, 1928, son of the late Lawrence and Leona (Brandt) Ludes. For nearly 40 years, he was employed at the Kimberly mill where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. After retirement, Mike worked at a friend's carpentry shop. He also enjoyed doing electrical work, repairing washers and dryers, and helping friends and family with any type of home projects.
Mike loved fishing and hunting, following the Milwaukee Brewers, bowling, softball and playing horseshoes. One of his favorite pastimes was singing and he was a longtime member of the church choir and a member of the MacDowell Male Chorus.
Mike was previously married to Dorie Ludes, and is also survived by six children, Anne (Rick) Hocking, Oshkosh; Cathy Squires, Appleton; Steve (Bobbie) Ludes, Little Chute; Laurie (Mark) Van Asten, Kimberly; Joan (Tom) Zierler, Kimberly; and Mary (Steve) Hamilton, Darboy. There are 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, Abby (Phil) Stuebs and their children, Gabriel and Ava; Anna Squires; Rashelle (Eric) LeCaptain and their children, Riannon, Elena and Brenna; Emily (Aaron) Castrop and their children, Aydin and Emaya; Katie Ludes and her son, Liam; Nicole Van Asten; Melissa Van Asten; Ryan (Jayme) Albrecht and their children, Lydia and Addison; Holly Albrecht and her special friend, Jesse Shoemaker; Kyle Albrecht; Samantha Zierler; Dylan Hamilton; Madelin Hamilton; Kevin (Tammie) Blaney and their children, Isabelle, Ethan and Autumn; Kerry (Mike) Mienel and their children, Lauren and Madison; and Moira Blaney. Other survivors include three sisters and two brothers, Dorothy (Jerry) Miller, Las Vegas; Jan (Gary) Nelson, Duluth; Beverly Ostronski, Duluth; Frank (Linda) Ostronski, Duluth; and Marsh (Julie) Ostronski, Duluth. Mike is also survived by a former son-in-law, Dave Squires, Menasha.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; Nick; a sister, Dori; a son-in-law, Greg Albrecht; and a special granddaughter, Amy Lynne Van Asten.

The family has established a memorial fund in Mike's name for cancer research at Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Unit 4 nursing staff at Appleton Health Center, the ThedaCare at Home Hospice team, to his many friends whom he cherished, and all who remembered Mike in their thoughts and prayers through the end of his journey.
Dad, your suffering brought us back together, making your deepest wish a reality. Now rest in peace. We will love you forever.
