- Evers, Karl J.Karl J. Evers, born March 23, 1922, in Little Chute, WI, died May 5, 200 5, at the age of 83 at Baptist Hospital. He served in the Army in the Paci fic Theater, in Okinawa, New Guinea, Ryukyus, Leyte, and the Phillipine s, as part of the Alamo Scouts; 503rd Parachute Infantry, serving from 194 2-1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant was a section leader of heavy machi ne guns, and received several decorations. Prior to WW II he was long cent er for the Green Bay Packers, a former linesman (referee) for the Knoxvil le Knights hockey team, he was an avid golfer, bowler, and stamp collecto r. Graduated from University of Wisconsin with a BS degree in Chemical Eng ineering and Economics, received a Master from the University of Missou ri in Journalism. He retired after a 28-year career with the Knoxville Ne ws Sentinel in 1985 as chief copy editor. He is preceded in death by his f irst wife Martha S. Evers in 1991.Survived by wife Bettie J. Evers, daughters and son-in-law: Kathleen E. Ph illips, Louisa Evers and Rebecca and JW "Hoss" Shipwash; grandchildren: Su zanne, Sherrie, and Eugene Phillips, Eric Shipwash; great grandchild, Isab ella Plymale, sisters and brother-in-law: Barbara Hillcoat, Nangie and Jo hn Gorenc, faithful companion Reggie of Badger Woods.In lieu of flowers memorials are to be made to Immaculate Conception Catho lic Church, 414 W.
