- STOUGHTON - Helen (Hyde) Schouten, age 94, passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2006, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson Hospice Care Center in Fitchburg. She was born and raised in Milwaukee. Helen received a bachelor's degree from Wisconsin State Teachers College (UW-Milwaukee) where she majored in elementary education and minored in art. She taught in Algoma until her marriage to James B. Schouten in August 1940. Helen and Jim settled in Green Bay, where they raised four daughters, Susan, Jane, Patricia and Mickey. In 1962, Helen resumed her teaching career at St. Matthew Grade School in Green Bay, retiring in 1971. She was acknowledged by many of her students for the difference she made in their lives, and she was featured in the St. Matthew Messenger as one of their most beloved teachers. Helen and Jim relocated to Middleton in 1990. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995. Helen's life was characterized by her profound faith in God, her strong conviction about the importance of family, her sense of humor, her appreciation and enjoyment of all children, and her unflagging enthusiasm for the Green Bay Packers. She is survived by her four daughters, Susan (Andres) Peekna of Waterford, Jane Crowell of New Berlin, Patricia (Richard) Weis of Blue Mounds, and Mickey (Ray) Mickevicius of Wausau; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held at ST. ANN'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 323 N. Van Buren St., Stoughton, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5, 2006, with Monsignor Gerard Healy presiding. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Nazareth House, would be greatly appreciated. The entire family gratefully acknowledges the extraordinary care Helen received from the staff at Nazareth House, Stoughton, from 2001 to 2006, and by the staff at HospiceCare during her last days.
