- Gertrude A. Gerend, formerly of Kaukauna, died on Monday, October 18, 2004 at Rennes Health Center in Appleton. Gert was born in Kaukauna on November 18, 1916, daughter of the late Edward and Lydia (Brenner) Grebe. On September 25, 1937, she married Norbert "Nubby" Gerend; he preceded her in death in 1987. Gert was a lifelong and faithful member of Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Kaukauna. Over the years, she acquired a great love for the arts, including drama, classical music of all kinds, and opera. She was an avid supporter of the Fox Valley Symphony and of productions at the Weidner Center. Gert also loved the outdoors, and was a volunteer at Thousand Islands Environmental Center in Kaukauna. Many will also remember her as a faithful fan of the Packers.
Gert is survived by a daughter, Lynn Smith, Lancaster, England; a brother, Edgar (Ruth) Grebe, Kaukauna; a sister, Virginia Grebe, Kaukauna; three sisters-in-law: Sr. Rose Gerend, Manitowoc; Jeanette Mauel, Little Chute; and Helen Grebe, Kaukauna; brother-in-law, Herbert (Kay) Gerend, Manitowoc; as well as by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Norbert, sisters: Eva Boettcher, Ada Olm and Ena Zuelzke; brothers: Donald, Elmer, and Luther Grebe, as well as numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.
A memorial service to remember Gert will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 21, 2004 at TRINITY EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 804 Grignon Street in Kaukauna with Rev. Karl Schultz officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may gather at the church on Thursday after 10 a.m. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be directed to Thousand Islands Environmental Center.
