- Hankey, Mitchel Wesley
Mitchel, of New London, was taken from us by injuries sustained in an auto accident at the young age of 18 on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009. He passed at Theda-Clark Hospital with his family and friends by his side.
Mitchel came flying into this world Sept. 12, 1991. He is the son of J. Douglas Hankey and Daphne K. (Adams) Hankey. Mitchel was currently homeschooled, but had attended New London High from 9th-11th grade. He chose to be homeschooled his senior year by his mother as he had been with his brother from kindergarten through 8th grade. He was a member of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts most of his life earning the highest rank in scouting, Eagle Scout, on Sept. 17, 2008. At age 13, he and his brother Ethan began a journey together of working daily on a local dairy farm owned by Alan Tank. Working there, he learned the value of the honest dollar for the next four years. During his 17th summer, he was a carpenter's assistant which he greatly enjoyed. Mitchel had a gift of being good with his hands. He had a strong interest in cars and anything mechanical. He enjoyed family, cats, hanging with his buds, and met life head-on. He was a very attentive and caring uncle and could light up a room with his brown eyes and big smile. Many will remember his wit and sense of humor. He will be missed for as long as we are here.
Mitchel's life cannot be limited by the use of words on paper. Words will never capture the fullness of his time here.
Through the tragic loss of his own life, Mitchel was able to give a second chance at life to a few lucky individuals. The spirit of who he was will live on in the spirits of those he helped to save.
Mitchel is survived by his mother and father; three siblings, sister, Valerie (Ben) Johnson, brothers, Jared Hankey (Mandy McGuire) and Ethan Hankey, who was his best bud; maternal grandparents, Wes and Lyda Adams; paternal grandfather, John D. Hankey; a niece, Jessie and two nephews, Travis and Ronan; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Helen T. Hankey.
Funeral service for Mitchel will be held on Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at 4 p.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, (110 E. Hancock St., New London) with Rev. Greg Watling officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.
If I had known it was to be the last time I saw you, I would have studied harder the twinkle in your eyes, the freckles on your face, every minute detail.
If I had known it was to be the last time I spoke with you, we would have talked forever.
If I had known it was to be the last time I touched you, I would have held you forever.
