- Harley Frederick Loker passed away on Nov. 14, 2008. He was born Feb. 8, 1914, to Fred A. and Maude Stone Loker in the Town of Rushford, Wis. Harley attended elementary school in Omro, graduated from Oshkosh High School and began college at Oshkosh Teachers College. He earned his B.A. degree from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis., where he met the love of his life, Laura Jane Birch. They married April 12, 1941, and raised three children with whom they shared many childhood adventures. Laura Jane and Harley enjoyed traveling together and were favorite partners in golf, tennis and bridge.
Harley worked as an accountant, credit manager and office manager throughout his life and served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Pensacola in World War II. He was a 54-year member of Neenah's First Presbyterian Church and also served on the Session.
Sport was an important part in Harley's life, as a player, fan and volunteer and he passed this joy of participation on to his children influencing their life choices. He played tennis, basketball and baseball in high school and college. He was a passionate supporter of Neenah High School basketball, founding and directing a summer basketball program for high school boys for over 30 years. An ardent golfer, Harley enjoyed competing in local, regional and state events. He was proud to have shot his age at 71 years and continued to do so each year through his 89th year at his home course, Ridgeway Country Club.
Harley was predeceased in death by Laura Jane in 2005; his parents, two brothers, and three sisters.
He is survived by sons, Rex (Juli) and Stephen (Roxanne); daughter, Suzanne (Tom Fyles); three granddaughters, Megan (Oshkosh); and Alexandra and Emily (Madison); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 200 Church Street, Neenah, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, with the Rev. Richard J. Moore officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to the First Presbyterian Church of Neenah, the Laura Jane and Harley Loker Scholarship at Neenah High School, the Neenah High School Athletic Program, or a charity of your choice.
