"I21666","Besser","Mary Chilton","1FamilyTree","22 Dec 1869","Allard","8 Oct 1851","17 Mar 1931","The Oregon Trail starts initially in Independence/Kansas City, the trail followed the Santa Fe Trail south of the Wakarusa River. After crossing The Hill at Lawrence, Kansas, it crossed the Kansas River near Topeka, Kansas, and angled to Nebraska paralleling the Little Blue River until reaching the south side of the Platte River, where it traveled along the Great Platte River Road. It followed the Platte, North Platte, and Sweetwater Rivers to South Pass in the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. From South Pass the trail approximately parallels the Snake River to the Columbia River at The Dalles, Oregon. From there, several branches and route variations over time led to the Willamette Valley, including boats down the Columbia River, the Santiam Wagon Road, the Applegate Trail and - the most popular route - the Barlow Road.
While the first few parties organized and departed from Elm Grove, the Oregon Trail's generally designated starting point was Independence or Westport on the Missouri River. Several towns along the Missouri River had feeder trails and make claims to being the starting point including Weston, Missouri; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Atchison, Kansas; and St. Joseph, Missouri.
The Oregon Trail's termination point was Oregon City, Oregon. (Since the info listed her birth as Oregon Trail, I will use the Long/Lat of Oregon City, Oregon.)"

She lived with my grandpa and grandma Simonsen throughout her widowhood. When she became advanced in years and could no longer easily make the trip to church each Sunday, she would put on her best purple dress, come downstairs and listen to church services on the radio until we returned home from our church service. When I was seven, she gave me my first Bible, carefully inscribed with her name. She died when I was 15 and perhaps because I cared for her, but was not as close to her as my grandparents, it was a perfect way to be introduced to the process of the end of life.
I recall her bedroom in my grandparents home quite well. It was simple and tidy. On the dresser was a photograph of her husband, my great grandfather, Adolph Hilker, whom I never met. He looked to me to be a large robust man with the most marvelous mustache. And she was such a tiny thing. They must have been an interesting couple."

There is some dispute from Erv Chell, a Cecil researcher that this John is the sone of Thomas.
John Cicill (Spelled Cissel and Cecil) the immigrant from Wales, England in 1658, died in 1698 and left a will in St. Mary's County naming wife Mary (possibly Calvert), and sons John, William, Thomas, Richard, Robert, Edward and James (Liber PC 1, page 104, film 144424) From the book ""Colonial Settlers, St. Clement's Bay 1734-1780, St. Mary's County, Maryland"" by Mary Louise Donnelly, states ""John Cissell (Cecil), a Catholic, immigrated to the Province of Maryland in 1658 from Wales, England (Patents 4:29). He married Mary __________. Upon his arrival, John Cissell was a man of means as he purchased a number of tracts in St. Mary's County. He became possessor of 150 acres of ""White Acre"" which on 12-Nov-1652 had been patented for William Brough on 25-Nov-1642, who died in 1651leaving his total estate to his wife Sarah (w 1:37). By 1707 the sons of John Cissell owned this acreage. John Cissell purchased 100 acres of ""Cadloe"" as did his brother William, which was patented on 4-Nov-1650 for Joseph Cadloe, who died in 1652. John Cissell also obtained 100 acres of ""Long Neck"" which on 10-Jun-1681 had been surveyed for John Addison who moved to Prince Georges County, Maryland. John Cissell, a gunsmith, wrote his will on 28-Apr-1698 and it was probated on 6-Jun-1698. To his sons Joh, William, Thomas, he left 150 acres of ""White Acre."" To his sons Richard and Robert he left 100 acres of ""Long Neck"". His son Edward was to receive the home plantation ""Poplar Neck"" after the death of Mary. If Edward died without heirs it was to pass to his youngest son James. On 26-Jul-1698 the estate of John Cissell was appraised and valued at L75.11.oo (inv 16;200.)From Salisbury Family Genealogy: In 1658 John, came to Maryland t look after his family's interests. (see notes on his father.) John settled in St. Mary's Co. !John Cicill (spelled Cissel and Cecil), the immigrant from Wales, England in 1658, died in 1698 and left a will in St. Mary's County naming wife Mary ? (possibly Calvert), and sons John, William, Thomas, Richard, Robert, Edward and James (Liber PC 1 page 104, film 144424).
William Cicell, son of John and Mary, died in St. Mary's County leaving Arthur, Luke, Margaret, Ann, Matthew and Clare.
Thomas Cissell, son of John and Mary, died in 1724 leaving a son, John, and a brother James. James Cissel, son of John and Mary, died in 1717 leaving James, Mary and Ruth.
Thomas Sissell, the immigrant in 1675, died in St. Mary's County in 1701 and left a will naming son, George, son-in-law James Thompson, brother, George and daughter-in-law, Betty.
Some claims have been made that John Cicill, son of John, the immigrant in 1658, was
the same John, of Prince Georges County, who married Elizabeth Sollers, and it has also been proposed that William, John the emigrant's son, was also living in Prince George's Co., but these claims have never been proven.
This information comes from ""The Cecil Family of Maryland"" by Walter V. Ball,
book call #929.273 C322b. Also from the will of John a copy of which is in
file.
From the book ""Colonial Settlers, St. Clement's Bay 1734-1780, St. Mary's County, Maryland"" by Mary Louise Donnelly, states ""John Cissell (Cecil), a Catholic, immigrated to the Province of Maryland in 1658 from Wales, England (Patents 4:29). He married Mary_______. Upon his arrival John Cissell was a man of means as he purchased a numer of tracts in St. Mary's County. He became the possessor of 150 acres of ""White Acre"" which on 11/12/1652 had been patented to Samuel Harris; 200 acres of ""Poplar Neck"" which had been patented for William Brough on 11/25/1642, who died in 1651 leaving his total estate to his wife Sarah (w 1:37). By 1707 the sons of John Cissell owned this acreage. John Cissell purchased 100 acres of ""Cadloe"" as did his brother William, which was patented on 11/4/1650 for Joseph Cadloe, who died in 1652. John Cissell also obtained 100 acres of ""Long Neck"" which on 6/10/1681 had been surveyed for John Addison who moved to Prince George's County.
John Cissell, a gunsmith, wrote his will on 4/28/1698 and it was probated on 6/6/1698. To his sons John, William and Thomas, he left 150 acres of ""White Acre."" To his sons Richard and Robert he left 100 acres of ""Long Neck"". His son Edward was to receive the home plantation ""Poplar Neck"" after the death of his wife. If Edward died without heirs it was to pass to his youngest son James. On 7/26/1698 the estate of John Cissell was appraised and valued at L75.11.oo (inv 16;200)
Elise Greenup Jourdan, in ""Early Families of Southern Maryland, Volume 1"" 1992, states that ""the Cecils and Cissells were prolific families who settled in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania in the 17th century. Their descendants pioneered lands in Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Illinois and many other states. "" Generally, Cecil is used for the Protestant lines and Cissell for the Catholic, but there are many spellings used in an assortment of records that are not consistent.
From Paul Tobler's research
John and family had a sailing vessel called the ""Martha Constant"" that plyed between Barbados Colony and the Maryland Colony, plus visits to Nevis, Virgin Islands. Some of these sailings could have been made for the transport of indentured servants. Barbados dated from 1627 with the British, Maryland dated 1632 and Nevis dated from 1627-28 with the British.
from Karen Salisbury: In Colonial Settlers of St. Clement's Bay 1734-1780, St. Mary's County, Md, by Mary Louise Donnelly, Will: Probated 16 June 1698, Appraised 26 July 1698, ...Ship Martha Constant...
Whis the James Cissell who is litsted in Hottens ""Lists of Emigrants to America 1600-1700"" on p 452, has a James Cissel, with 22 acres of Land in St. Michael's Parish, Barbadoes with 1 hired servant, 0 bought servants, 16 negroes?
from Paul Tobler:
Property that John B. Cecil owned was called ""Cadloe"", ""Longneck""
""White Acres"", ""Poplar Neck""
3)a. Cadloe he had originally obtained 100 acres upon arrival.
3)b. Longneck of 100 acres was added.
3)c. White Acres of 150 acres was added.
3)d. Poplar Neck of 200 acres was added.
Therefore he had a minimum of 550 acres of property.
The home place was on ""Poplar Neck"" where they lived with the residence
there."

Cordi, both 17. They may have been his younger siblings. He was from Prussia and listed his occupation as farmer, as did Peter. A.M. Cordi listed her occupation as servant. They reported that their destination was Illinois.
A Nicholaus Cordi and Catherine Arenz had a son Joseph Maria Cordi on Feb. 8, 1868 in Stockbridge, Calumet. This has to be the same Nic Cordi, but I can't explain his wife's name, unless he married Mary Holzer after Catherine Arenz. Information was from the Calumet birth records.
Also from the Calumet birth records, a John Leopold Cordy and Catherine Anna had a son Frank Cordy on Dec. 14, 1891 in Harrison. They had older children John and Herman. I don't know if this family is related or not.
Nicholas Cordy bought farmland in Wisconsin, and was registered there in 1893.
By the time of the 1900 census, Nic's wife Mary Holzer had died. Living with him were four children: Rosa (26), Frank (21), Lucy (18) and Nicholas (16). The names of the other children came from family trees posted by others and may or may not be correct for this family. To date I have not been able to locate Nic Cordy on 1860, 1870, or 1880 census records.

From Marion Harney Newbury in July 2003 Cripps was a butcher by trade, he was also a drinker, Aunt Ella went back to live with Winifred on the family farm in Kaukauna as they didn't have a retirement plan and he stayed at the Bethel home for men in Duluth , Minn... he died before she did , however, after I was born as the family tells stories of he in his butcher apron grabbing me to hoist in the air, etc. He was a nice guy...she died in Wis at age 93.
I have asked my brother, John to request the military records as he was Marine...Bay of Pigs....Mal, was in the Marines, John was in the Army, qui te a hero, Tom was in the Navy...Mal had the greatest picture of the three of them, each in respective uniforms which disappeared along with most of his belongings from his apartment in Minneapolis as he outlived Gladys, they had no children and his attorney ripped him off as did his house keeper...it was a shame ..he had scrapbooks of famous people who had s nt himn things and he had willed them to me. He left legacy to each of his nieces and nephews and we wouldn't have gotten a dime if cousin, Tim hadn't threatened the attorney with criminal action,...tjhat's the trouble with the Harney men..they outlive their spouses and keep their good looks and this money grubbers go after them and their first wife was good, kind, and honest so they are quite naive .. John who raised Pat and Tim after their father was killed and their mother died a years later..they were 2 & 3 made a will in which he left his properties which were consideral to Pat and Tim ...the will was not ""found"" until a year or two after his death and someone mailed it to Catharine, who in turn mailed it to me and I called Tim...Laura and her two sons..who were right out of the Munsters ( undertakers at that) had taken all his money and hid the will....and then I had to step in and save Dad from Hulda and her relatives at the end..Hulda means witch in Swedish and they sure knew how to name her...You will not hear from Tim who had a lovely wife named Ginny and 5 grownk ids. Pat is blind from years of alcholism..he was in the Marines...a career Marine that is why; he is in San diego..his name is, James Patrick Harney...Tim is Lawrence Timothy Harney. He was in the national guard. The Tom Harneys are still in Boca Ratan Florida...Mary Margaret Paganie (sp)and Tom Junior and his wife, Rosemary but the oldest, Mary Catharine died at age 35 having married a tom Donohue and had 7 children;;; ;lived in Superior, Wisconsin. She died in childbirth and tim and wife ginny took the new baby in for a time and I believe she just got married..the baby that is... Tim has 5 children who are now adults but he has not responded to my requests that he respond to you or lInda...he says he has one son who might be interested in history but he isn't. He is retired fr om his accounting buisness and seldom is in touch with his brother, pat..who became the black sheep of the family when he tried fraud on Uncle Mal in the early 60s. he had already alienated most of the family...alcoholic.I have sent you a packet of family docs..so read them and if you have questions ask me."

He had two brothers, Paul and Dominiue who settled in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. After settling in Allouez, Joseph had four sons, Joseph Jr., Paul, Toussaint and Louis. His children were particularly talented in music, especially his son Louis was considered the ""official fiddler"" of the settlement. The family, especially Joseph, Jr. were active in civic and church affairs in the Town of Allouez. The family was honored with ""DuCharme Lane"", a road which extends from W. He was officially interred on 14 JUL 1946 at St. Snelling National Cemetery, South Minneapolis, MN., in Section C, Site 14357. After the death of his mother, Clara Roehl, his father had 5 children who were motherless. Henry John Dunsirn then married Lydia Dorman, nee Meyer. (Meier). She had been divorced from her husband, Herbert H. Dorman. She is listed in the 1930 U.S. Census for Henry, listed as a housekeeper, along with her children from her first marriage, Clifford Dorman, Annabelle Dorman, and another.
After the death of Clara, Louis and his older brother had it tough. They were pawned off to various relatives to live. Clara's parents would not even help out. All of Henry's concentration was on raising Lydia's children. Lydia Meyer Dorman Dunsirn divorced Henry on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment. Whether they ever married again is unknown, but they then continued to live together. From this union, one daughter, Faith was born. On her birth record her father is listed as Henry Dunsirn and her mother is listed as Lydia Dorman. You figure it out!!!!!!!!!!
Lydia then went onto marry two more times. In all, she was married 4 times. She was the mother of 3 Dorman children, and the mother of Faith Dunsirn.
This was a big item which bothered Robert Dunsirn, son of Henry - basically being abandoned. Robert Dunsirn authored a private book, ""I Dunno,"" which his sons had published for personal use. He describes in detail in that book his hardships as a youth.
P.S. After Robert Dunsirn divorced Agnes Kutz, he married Carol Ann Utschig. I do not know what her married name was or her children. She is still living.
Robert Dunsirn ended up a millionaire plus when he died. He originally started the ""Atlas Tag Company"" in Appleton, WI. That business was sold and/or acquired by a big label company, where Robert made his millions."

"I310087","Dutch","Names","1FamilyTree"," "," ","","","In 1811 The Netherlands were under the siege of Napoleon. He introduced the civil registration. From then on it was mandatory to have a last name. Before 1811 the use of a last name was common in some parts of The Netherlands, but in most parts it was not. People used the so-called patronym (the first name of the father). Jan Willems meant simply Jan, son of Willem.
When the use of a last name became mandatory, people had to create a last name. Sometimes it was derived from a profession, hobby or distinguishing mark; something the person ""was"". Then the prefix ""de"" or ""het"" was sometimes added. Example; de Ruiter (the rider)
Sometimes the last name was derived from the town or village the person lived in, or from his surroundings; something the person was ""from"". Example; van Dijk (from/of dike)
Sometimes you see the prefix ""van de"" or ""van het"". A last name with this prefix originates also from the surroundings the person who took on this name lived in.
Example; van de Klei (from/of the clay)
The prefixes ""van"", ""de"", ""het"", ""van de"" and ""van het"" are typical Dutch.
In Germany you will find prefixes like ""von"" (from) and ""der/die/das"" (the).
In France you will find prefixes like ""du"" (from the) and ""le"" or ""la"" (the)."

landed at Ellis Island, New York with their two sons, John, 14 years old, and Thomas, 12 years old. The family went from Ellis Island to Askeegan, Wisconsin and farmed there. John was a very hard worker and remained in upstate New York for ten or twelve years after his family moved to Wisconsin, working on the laying of pipe lines for gas lighting and heating in New York, getting his citizenship and saving all his money from pipeline work. He then moved west at about age 26 to join his family in Wisconson after his younger brother had already married. There John farmed in Askeeton and read law to become a lawyer. He met Mary Brogan, the daughter of a prominent farmer in Askeeton, John Brogan, eventually married her and later became mayor of Green Bay (according to his grandaughter, Elizabeth Jane Early). Thomas farmed with his father until he bought his own land.

Fran ces' goodness extended to sewing new coats with capes for her three year o ld nieces - Ruth and Virginia Elsbernd. After her parents died, Frances shared her home with Rudy and Ethel Lutken haus. Herman and John Fink, sons of Herman Finkenfluegel, evidently received the proceeds of the farm sale. From that point on, Herman cared for his mother, Anna Marie Lauterbach at the 3rd St. Menasha home. Herman owned that home and worked at the Island Paper Company. He later moved to Fond du Lac where he resided with his daughter Mary Fink Mallman until he was placed in a Fond du Lac nursing home (Fond du Lac Lutheran Home) where he later died. While at the nursing home, a movie was made regarding the place. Herman is suppose to have had a part in the movie which was a Hollywood type venture.
Did this Joseph Fink really a son of this Herman. We know that Herman Finkenfleugel also had a son named Joseph who died at a young age.

Patrick 4/1868 (born in IL)
Francis ca 1870 (born in IL)
Elizabeth 12/1873 (born in IL)
Margaret ca 1875 (born in IL)
The family appears with the first three children in the the 1860 Federal Census in Holland, Brown county, Wisconsin. Owen Finnegan, age 65 is shown living with them. I'm guessing this is either Peter's father or uncle. There are a number of Finnegan families in Holland in the 1860 census. There is also an Owen Farry and wife Catherine and their children and, I believe, her mother Mary, born ca 1792 in Ireland.
I believe I've found the immigration records for Owen himself and some of the other Finnegan family members in 1857 on the St. George. I haven't found Peter's, and based on the age of their first child, I think that Bridget was not yet married to Peter when she emigrated (date given in the 1900 census as 1846).
Daughter Rose married Emmett Carraher in Nebraska (Schoolcraft, Madison County) and they had a large family in Nebraska. Their daughter Mary (called Mollie) Carraher married Charles Gillespie in Schoolcraft, NE. Their son is the paternal grandfather to my kids, so I'm trying to backtrack and include this information in the family tree. I'd like to confirm that Peter was Owen's son, determine what Bridget's maiden name was and (if possible) her parents names, as well as the name of Peter's mother.
If anyone can connect any of the other family groups of Finnegans in Holland, I'd be doubly grateful."
