The 'CHAVET' Family
(Variations on the name are many: Shavet, Schavet, Shaffet, Schawet, Chevette, Hubet, Chevet, Chared, Chant; we have used 'Chavet' as most census records found use this spelling, as of July 2012)
The following write up is transcribed from a note given to Robert L. Meister from his father, Walter R. Meister, son of Caroline Chavet and Herman Ernest Meister. I do not know the date it was written. Jacques Shavet (Chavet) and ??Benet are his maternal grandparents.
"This is my mother's 'family dossier'
My mother, Caroline Shavet (he used this spelling) Meister, was born April 4, 1856 (there are conflicting records for this birth, on most census records her date is more around 1859) in Cooperstown, Wis., a farm village about 20 miles east of Green Bay.
Her father was Jacques Shavet (I believe John Francis Chavet as he is the only likely name in most of the census records in Cooperstown, WI, in one census I believe is this family, he is listed as Francis). Her mother's last name was Benet, and I cannot remember her first name. (all records found indicate the first name to be Josephine or Mary, could be middle name used as first name – no evidence so far on the maiden name – other trees may have LeJoly).
They were born in Alsace, Lorraine, a section of France (this section of land is right on the border of France & Germany, the area was exchanged many times over the various wars, most persons from that area either spoke Alsatian or German, the French dialect never gained control).
I do not know when they came to America (there is a Nat. paper document for John F. Chavet indicating he came in June of 1846 to New York-still being researched). My maternal grandfather taught school in the winters, and farmed in the Spring and Summer and presumably, in early Fall.
Her sisters and brothers (note the plural of brothers, though he only lists one brother) were Henry, who went as a young man to Twin Brooks, S. Dak. Ma and one of her sisters went to visit them there about 35 years or so and he was living then, and had a family.
Her sisters, Minnie (Mrs. Karl Schunk) Suamico, just out of Green Bay….Mary (Mrs. John Pittsman, Manitowoc), Anna…Boyd, WI (forgotten her name) …Margarete (Mrs. Henry Gortsmann Goetzman, Kaukauna, WI)…Helena (Mrs. Bernard Fetzer-Manitowoc).
Fini
My family:
Mrs. Herman Ernest (Carolina Shavet) Meister.
Sisters, Ruth and Elizabeth(Bessie), Edwin, William, Herman (nickname 'Chip'), Arthur (died in a hunting accident in the early '20's), Walter (youngest son, but older than Ruth & Bessie).
No particular accomplishments, but we were never in jail either.
