  Drowned. Body of John Servaes Found at the Locks. Fell in Last Night While Crossing Combined Locks Gates. 5-8-1912 John Servaes, who resided with his family just beyond Black's woods, was drowned early this morning in one of the locks at the Combined. A dinner pail floating in the lock shortly after 7 o'clock when a boat was passing through caught Locktender Jacob Wittmann's attention and when the water was drawn from the lock the body of Servaes was found lying at the bottom, face downward. Mr. Servaes, who had been engaged at mason work on the opposite side of the river, left his home about 6 o'clock this morning and it is presumed fell into the lock while attempting to cross the gates, as the drop is quite a distance he was probably stunned so as to be unable to cry for assistance. At any rate, Locktender Wittmann, who resides close at hand, did not hear any noise and no one witnessed the accidental death, the exact facts of which will never be known. John Servaes has lived in Kaukauna many years and was married about twenty-four years ago to Mary Verhoven of Freedom, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Verhoven, are dead. Surviving are his wife and the following children: Anton and Elizabeth of this city; Joseph, Theodore, Dora and Henry at home, also his brother, Louis Servaes, government foreman of this city. ______ Servaes Funeral Last Sad Rites of Workman Who Was Drowned Last Week. 5-10-1912 The funeral services of John Servaes who was drowned at Combined Locks last Friday morning were held at Holy Cross church Monday morning at nine o'clock. Rev. F. J. Lochman officiating, and his body was laid at rest in the family lot at Holy Cross cemetery, followed to his last home by the deeply sorrowing wife and children and his brothers and sisters. Mr. Servaes met his death only a short distance of the spot where he was born on the old Servaes homestead, the buildings of which have long since disappeared; the old home was located just above on the high bank of the bluff where most of the Servaes family were born. Twenty-one years ago an older brother, Joseph Servaes, met with death in the river not far from this spot, while helping rebuild the Combined Locks dam, when the superstructure suddenly was swept out with the high water and his body was carried away with the debris and was not found until two weeks afterwards, when John Killawee, locktender at the first lock, Kaukauna, found it at the gates of the upper lock. Those attending the services from out of town were Mrs. Sophia Hurkens, a sister of Humbolt, Mich., Joseph Duss of Boyd, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Peter Boots and family and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Van Lieshout and family of Little Chute, Albert Verhagen and family of Darboy, Henry Servaes, his brother of Appleton, Theo. Vande Bloomer of Freedom, and John Vanden Bloomer of DePere, Albert and Wm. Vogels of Appleton. The pallbearers were Edward Cox, John McMorrow, Charles Prommer, John Weiler, Mich. Meagher and Anton Miller. Mrs. Sophia Duss, a sister of Boyd, was not able to attend the funeral on account of her own bodily ailments. A private road leading from the main highway near William Hyland's was the only means of reaching the little cottage home where the family were mourning the loss of their parent and protector, and it was with considerable difficulty that the heavy hearse made its way in and out, having several times to leave the beaten track to keep from being stalled in the deep ruts.
