  Cantigny, a tiny village outside the larger town of Montdidier, saw the first offensive for the Americans of World War I by the 1st Infantry Division. Willie's 28th Infantry Regiment captured the village in the first 45 minutes of battle, but counterattacks ensued. The Americans suffered 199 men killed in action and captured 250 German prisoners.
